By 1972, Michael Nesmith's solo career was at a crossroads. The First National Band had broken up the year before, and The Second National Band only survived for one album. Nesmith was very successful in England, but at home, his album sales were dwindling; despite great reviews, he still had the shadow of The Monkees hanging over him, and much of the public still regarded him as a musical lightweight. He still owed RCA two more albums, and one night over dinner, Nesmith and steel guitarist Red Rhodes decided to do an album on their own.
The album, sardonically titled AND THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMIN', was issued in August 1972. It works very well. The ten tracks include a version of Nes' signature song, "Different Drum," originally a hit for Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Poneys, "Roll With The Flow," and "Harmony Constant."
The second album on this "two-fer" is 1973's PRETTY MUCH YOUR STANDARD RANCH STASH, Nesmith's final RCA album. This time, Michael brought in a seven-piece country band who recorded for his short-lived Countryside Records imprint. This album is also quite good, including a new version of the Monkees-era track "Some of Shelly's Blues," the Nesmith originals "Continuing" and "Release," Cindy Walker's "Born to Love You," and a bluegrass medley called "The Back Porch and a Fruit Jar Full of Iced Tea."
Unlike the previous "two-fers," there are no bonus tracks on this CD; apparently Michael felt there was no archival material from the period worthy of release.
All in all, another fine effort. While Nes has done a lot of good work on his own Pacific Arts label, his RCA albums are clearly the best of his solo career.

I remember Mike Nesmith as the guitarist of the Monkees but the Mike Nesmith here has clearly grown-up and become a brilliant songwriter and musician. Since this is a double album on one disc, let me break it down by album:
And the hits keep coming: This has some of the best songwriting I've ever heard period. It's basically folk-rock at it's finest with a hint of country in the steel guitar that's found in all the songs. There are even some psychadelic elements sprinkled over the foundation. The lyrics and music are extremely good and have the best elements of the genres I mentioned. I can't believe this was recorded in just a week; that shows how much talent is here. This is truly a classic that deserved more attention from the mainstream.
Pretty much your standard ranch: This album has the folk-rock element too but the country takes on a bigger part in the sound. There's also some standard rock elements found in some songs. It's hands down the weaker of the albums because as this one progresses, it feels more like Nesmith is just fooling around and jamming. Nevertheless, this has some amazing music on it as well (with great lyrics to go with it).
If you've never heard Mike Nesmith, start here and be amazed like I was.
If you don't like country, banjo, or steel guitar whatsoever then you shouldn't waste your time because that vibe is here but it only makes the album work better.

Nesmith is an inventor... maybe without patents, but he such an innovator. Music, business models, creating new perspectives. The service from this seller was also great... who'd imagine buying from England is as easy as buying from any other vendor on Amazon. Super.

this is a big reason why I have not cared about music award shows for years--they suck---it's brown nose and suck up that are hot,and really good music gets the finger----how sad for true music lovers, well maybe later--if you all like real music like nes,new riders, commander cody, byrds and the like, tell the younger people you meet-if for nothing more than to give them at least a chance to hear some real music.

Pure Michael Nesmith. I had the vinyl many years ago. It spoke to me then...it speaks to me now.

These two albums by the genius that is Michael Nesmith show why he remains a pioneer in the country rock genre. Cuts like The Upside of Goodbye, Different Drum, and Some of Shelly's Blues are the reason Rolling Stone magazine called his material "the best music you've never heard." Do yourself a favor and hear it.

The Steve Earle of his day?

Intelligent country-rock for intelligent fans of the same. By this point in his career Nesmith was starting to cool a bit on the C&W and his infatuation with lounge music was slightly softening his edges. Nonetheless these two albums are respected and deservedly so. File next to Gene Clark, Steve Young or Gram Parsons.

Replacing vinyl copies that are awaiting sale . I love both of these lp's but I live in a small house and cd's are great in the car. If you do not know this music I should get know it, asap. However if you like bands such as 'Coldsore' you will probably hate it.
