A single album was also released on which most of the singles were included. The album was very competently produced by Barry de Vorzon, who also wrote a part of the album's material. The group was stylistically close to Ricky Nelson and The Crickets ( after Buddy Holly ) and the album is definitely still worth hearing and you should especially notice the fine vocals.
The group moved to RCA in 1963 and four more singles were sent out during 1963-64. Some of these are included in this compilation, but unfortunately the sound is not and definitely not on par with Valant recordings. You can't help suspect that the release could be a bootleg.
The group continued until 1969 without being able to repeat the success of "Rhythm of the Rain". Several more singles were released on different labels and two albums that were released in 1968 and 1969 sank without a trace.
Among the later singles on this compilation, you'll notice "Cheryl's Going Home" and "Flying on the Ground" (Neil Young!!) - both fine recordings which sound, unfortunately, are under par.
The group deserves a better collection than this one, where only the first 13 tracks sound decent, and a booklet with information about the songs and the band should have been there.
Valiant was an independant record label owned by song-writer Barry De Vorzon and bunches of his songs are on this CD. This CD is somewhat a tribute to De Vorzon. It has his hit label songs sung by other artists, "Angel On My Shoulder" (Shelby Flint) plus new-comer songwriters like Burt Bacharach Bob Lind ..and Neil Young!
(Afficianatos will appreciate the first recording of Neil Young's "Flying on the Ground" , the last attempt by Cascades in 1967)
Cascades aren't considered much more than a one hit wonder, but a clear-eared listen reveals fine up-front vocals and a sweet background all in true stereo.
Barry De Vorzon went on to film and TV music scoring, most notably "The Young and the Restless", a Top 10 hit due to Nadia Comanci, a Romandian Olympic gymnist using that theme for her Gold Medal in 1976.
One Hit Wonders indeed!!
