Love this movie. Traumatized me in my childhood and now I own it to get back at my bro for showing it to me, I'm gonna introduce his kids to it. Lol!
In all seriousness tho, it's a fun one. It aged... Interestingly. Lots of creepy stuff for kids to freak out at.
My biggest complaint would be that the audio on it seemed so quiet, but I was watching it on a college classroom monitor so that could have been a huge factor.
If you know the book, you'll notice they changed a few things for time/conscience purposes. It didn't but me at all but some of my hyper obsessed friends were a little distraught by it. We had fun joking and laughing at some of the odd choices in the film. Some lines are historical now.
Highly recommend. It's a good time, just don't take it too seriously.

Captures the Essence of The Hobbit Book in a Charming Animated Adaptation
This animated movie holds a special place for me. I was 8 years old when it first aired and I had never heard of JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth before. I was pulled into the world by this cartoon and have been a fan ever since. The style of the animation is true to the spirit of Tolkien's work. It is reminiscent of his own style of drawing. The music has a traditional fairy tale lyrical sound to it. The voice acting is superb. Considering its length and some of the edits necessary to stay within the time constraints, it is essentially true to the classic children's book.Overall this is a charming and entertaining adaptation beautifully brought to life by the legendary Rankin Bass studio.

I’m using Siri to write this so please excuse any strange words. I’ve heard about this movie/cartoon for many years. I always wanted to get it. I came across it in prime the price was extremely reasonable. I sat and listen to it. Yes, I couldn’t see what was going on, but there was enough information to let me know what was going on. It’s a nice movie and obviously started the whole Lord of the rings trilogy, I plan on getting those maybe next overall it was a good place to start. It explained a lot of the background material that I’ve never quite understood about trolls gremlins, etc. so now I am aware of what they are when I watch Lord of the rings take care. I hope you enjoy the one quote I got about it was I hope the hair doesn’t fall off your toes :-) what a great quote take care. Thanks for reading my review.

My brother had an LP with storybook when we were little ( in the late 70s early 80s). Listening to it with big 70s style headphones was a treat for us. It was on HBO max for a while but is no longer, so I purchased it digitally. I love the story, music, voices, & classic Rankin Bass animation. It was originally on tv as a special in 1977, but it was on past my bedtime. It was one of our favorite Christmas presents and sometimes when I’m having trouble falling asleep, I will listen to it as I drift off. It never gets old. I love Tolkein, even if it isn’t 100% accurate to the book. I LOVE Gandalf’s voice & Bilbo’s. It’s a classic. A perfect introduction for young kids- exciting but not TOO intense/scary. Wholesome family entertainment.

While it makes a few very odd choices, such as the Elvenking looking like a goblin, most of the spider sequence, and Gollum’s design, I really enjoyed this film. Generally speaking, I found it hewed closer to the spirit of the book than the more recent trilogy did (Although there were certainly other things that they did better), and was a very faithful telling of a classic novel. It is interesting to see how Tolkien’s world was imagined before the Jackson films, and this is certainly an interesting and delightful take. As with Tolkien’s books, music is found throughout, and in many cases, his own lines are used, either directly, or for inspiration, in creating the songs of this film. I listen to the warg-song on its own sometimes, it is so good. “Misty Mountains” is also very good. The animation is very visually appealing, outside of the spiders and wood-elves. The Shire, Smaug, and the Company all look especially good. Gandalf’s voice actor, while not McKellen, fits the role very well. The film is very unwilling to show violence, which is good for young viewers, but in a story with battles, I personally don’t find spinning-effects a suitable replacement for sword-strikes. I was not a fan of Gollum’s voice actor, but making him essentially a frog-thing, larger than Bilbo, rather than a withered and worn creature that had once been a hobbit himself, really ruined the riddles scene for me. Overall, this movie has some major flaws, but it is a very fun viewing experience, and I would strongly recommend anyone who likes the Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings see it at least once.

First of all don't worry about this being Spanish. It may have been manufactured in Spain. The language was probably added by English speakers.
My DVD player decided to play a disc "KES" in German, attempting to change the language back to English I somehow changed the DVD p!ayer's set up menu to Greek. I am stuck with it. The Kes disc plays in English but the player still thinks it is Greek. LOL.
I put this Hobbit disc in the player wondering how I will cope. The first screen is an anti-piracy notice in Spanish. The second screen waits for you to make a choice I pressed MENU.
I got another screen with three choices all in Spanish. I pressed the second one and it was for chapter choice with no choice for the first chapter so I had to take the disc out and start again .
After I pressed MENU the second time I press the top words and they obviously mean PLAY and the DVD started. It worked great. The voices though obviously not English native speakers were speaking in Englsh. Very easy to understand.
I never had to indicate I wanted the disc to play in English but it just did.
Considering it was inexpensive it was very good. The faces of goblins were not scary. Bard the archer looked severe but not scary. The trolls and behaviour might scare a young child but my grandson aged a youngish 11 will be capable of watching this with no fear though someone will be close by to explain things.
Things like the Dragon attacking Laketown and the fire are not as realistic as in the "grown up" version. The townspeople jump in the water or run away.
I am going to buy a copy for my grandson today.
I have put the disc in a gold 2-way case to match my other Lord of the rings discs alongside the animated version of the first part of Lord of the Rings. What shame they never made the second part.
So fear not the Hobbits do speak English.
