Great book, nice edition, a few scuffs
I really like this edition a lot. This book is very nice and easy to read. A good font size. The vinyl on the outside was peeling off when I got it tho. I think this is a manufacturing issue. Ive tried to order this book from a few places and they always come in peeling no matter where i get it from. (See pictures) the one i got here on amazon is not the worst one ive seen. I took one star off just because of the damage.It has clean, easy to read print. There are a few black and white pictures. The gold edges of the paper are really pretty and shiny. I am willing to overlook the ripped vinyl on the cover because honestly this is a nice looking book.

This is beyond "acceptable" to buy used. This thing is falling apart.

Five stars for Tolkien and the book itself (a classic)
So you get an average of two stars.
Review goes like this:
When I first got this (used but listed in good condition), I was thrilled. The faux leather had a nice, albeit subtle feel, and the whole book seemed lovely. But as soon as I started reading it, all of the leathery external facade started to crack and expose white binding underneath (which appears to be a flakey but thick pressed paper).
Within a year, the book looks a terrible mess. A third of the cover has flaked off. I'm considering sanding off the remaining faux-leather and maybe painting the cover with a polyacrylic mix? The inside is lovely and well laid out, and of course the text itself is everything you'd expect, but the binding is horrid and doesn't deserve a space on your shelf.
"Deluxe" leather-substitute peels and falls apart after a few months.

Mi spiego meglio: l'idea del rivestimento in pelle e delle decorazioni in oro in un'edizione illustrata tascabile non è affatto male, il problema è com'è stata realizzata.
La qualità di stampa è buona, sufficiente anche per i disegni (in bianco e nero).
I punti cruciali di questa edizione sono due:
- la copertina;
- il costo.
La pelle della copertina è in realtà un sottilissimo strato di gomma marrone mal incollato, che si rovina da niente insieme alle scritte sovrimpresse rendendo il tutto inguardabile.
Le due mappe si trovano una all'inizio ed una alla fine del libro, come di consueto, ma incollate tra la prima pagina e la copertina; riguardandole non si potrà fare a meno di notare la poca cura messa nell'incollarla sul cartone.
Per un'edizione "deluxe" da 20€ a prezzo pieno mi sarei aspettato qualcosa di più in termini di qualità e cura.
