"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language.

Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels. Presented here in the standard hardcover edition using the author's original jacket design.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

Written for Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

First published in the U.K. in 1937, this is the volume that introduced the world to hobbits, Middle-earth, Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the wizard, and the Ring of power. A new edition, formatted for younger readers, was released in August and features cover art by Peter S!s (ISBN 0-618-16221-6. $18; pap. ISBN 0-618-15082-X. $10).

Review

"Warm and dusky colors predominate in the handsome full-color scenes--forty-eight in all, including five lavish spreads--that embellish this edition, which is also beautifully designed." Booklist, ALA —

The Hobbit is definitely an AMAZING story, and this edition is a very good quality one. I would definitely recommend it.

However, I saw a review referring to it as "The Hobbit as it was first published," but that is not the case. This is the latest edition, not a reprint of the 1st edition. So, if you're wanting a 1st Edition Facsimile, keep looking.

If you want a great copy of a great book, then this is for you!

It's interesting to review a book I've loved since I read it in grade school and am now reading toy children. I'm tempted to just write about the book itself--the size, illustrations, print and paper quality and such. But maybe you've never read The Hobbit and are wondering what all this is about and whether there's an interesting story hiding in there or if it's just another over-hyped "Classic" like Wuthering Heights or some such. The Hobbit deserves it's status as a classic. Along with The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, it was responsible for creating the modern fantasy genre but unlike more modern works by novelists like George Martin, Robert Jordan, and RA Salvatore, it retains a connection to the past. You can read Beowulf or the Saga of Burnt Njal and recognize the echoes in the Hobbit while the others are thoroughly contemporary works despite being set in a world with swords and dragons. Also, while the language of the Hobbit is rich and will stretch many modern readers, the story itself is told at a level appropriate for grade school children. (My daughters have been known to chant, "another chapter! Another chapter!" after dinner). The tone is a little lighter and more whimsical than The Lord of the Rings.

But for those of you, who like me, know that you like the story and want to have a copy of dead tree without spending an arm and a leg for genuine goatskin binding, this is an excellent option. It's a little smaller than the hardbacks that grace the middle of Costco and uses thick matte paper but it is clear and easy to read and faithfully reproduces what I believe to be Tolkien's original illustrations with their simple charm. This is The Hobbit as it was first written and if you don't want to spring for the goat leather bound version on glossy paper illustrated by John Howe and Allan Lee (and don't get me wrong, if there is one of those, I think I want it) this is a great version.

This book is a great classic book for 5th grader transitioning to middle school. I didn't think my daughter would have any interest in this book, but she did. I always try to purchase hard cover books so they can last longer. Definitely don't hesitate to buy this book.

The 1st book I received had a factory error. The book cover was upside down. A replacement was sent which of course was in excellent condition.

I'd lost (misplaced) my very early The Hobbit paperback edition. Hoping that I can relocate it. But, in the midst of mid-winter doledrums, I felt that I needed a Tolkien fix, and wanted to go back to basics. Had to reorder, out of desperation; Great book; top quality; does not disappoint.

When you read a good book, you sometimes can't stop singing it's praises. In my opinion, "The Hobbit," is one of those books. I actually had not read this book until a few years ago, and regret not reading it earlier in my life. 'The Hobbit' is at one level simply a charming adventure story, perhaps one of the most charming and most adventurous ever told. If you haven't read it, you should, because it is quite enjoyable. Read it to your children and luxuriate in the excitement and joy that shines from their faces. That's enough.

Many people often imagine heroes as strong and comely in form. Comic books are filled with mythic heroes whose exaggerated human virtues amount to "beat people up" good. Tolkien's protagonist is radically different than such heroes as, Lancelot, Beowulf, or Batman. Bilbo Baggins is small, mundane, weak and sometimes whiny. Of all characters in this story he possibly possesses the least amount of "fighter's instinct." Yet, he is not a completely mundane character. Bilbo is one of my favorite of all times characters as he is gentle, simple, and humble. He bears no grudges and desires no vengeance. Bilbo is indeed another breed of hero; A hero who succeeds though a mixture of luck and common sense. Bilbo is a unique take on the everyman hero!

Gandalf is also a favorite of mine, despite being a deus ex machina in several situations. The wisdom of Gandalf along with his pure, unfailingly good, although slightly grumpy demeanor make him quite interesting, and mysterious.

The Hobbit is an outstanding book that I highly recommend to all adults and their children!
