"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language. Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels. This beautiful hardcover features cover art by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

So good. Must Read.

So good. Must Read.
If you want to escape your own world and dive into one where danger and adventure lurk around every corner, “The Hobbit” might just be for you. In it you will find extraordinary characters, unlikely heroes, menacing foes, and a timeless story that weaves them all perfectly together. At the heart of the story is Bilbo Baggins, a perfectly plain hobbit content to live a quiet life, who never expected that adventure would literally come knocking on his front door. Before long he finds himself (not altogether unwillingly) thrust into a quest to help Thorin Oakenshield and his band of dwarves in reclaiming their lost home and treasure from the dreadful dragon Smaug.Tolkien’s masterful writing brings this adventure to life in a way few authors could have. His rich descriptions create landscapes that come alive in your mind. Whether it’s the lush Shire or the dusty halls within the Lonely Mountain, you feel like you’re right there with Bilbo and company. But it’s not just Tolkien’s masterful world-building that makes “The Hobbit” such an incredible read. He infused his characters with depth and charm, and gave you a front row seat to all their incredible development. Bilbo, in particular, evolved from a timid hobbit to a courageous adventurer. You can’t help but cheer for him as he grows throughout the book. My favorite part though is that Tolkien made sure we were never to think Bilbo became unafraid. Like any great hero, he wrestled with his fears, but did the hard things anyway.“The Hobbit” truly is an enchanting read that balances edge-of-your-seat action with quiet moments of reflection. It seems less of a book and more a doorway into a world you will want to keep visiting over and over again.

I read Tolkien way back in high school and fell in love with fantasy. Since then, I've reread the Hobbit and LOTR several times. In a way, his writing style isn't 'in vogue' anymore. They teach you to get right to the action and keep it coming so the reader stays engaged. I've gotten to a point in my life where I'm trying to slow down. Enjoy the journey. Tolkien is outstanding in that regard. Not that his books or his writing is boring or tedious. Quite the opposite. His work is storytelling at its finest. The reader experiences the tale. Lives it. And there's so much depth to it that, if you read it in a cursory way, you'll miss a lot. Anyway. It's a classic for a reason. If you like fantasy, read the work by the man who basically created the genre. If you've never read it, give it a try.

Tolkien is the grandfather of modern fantasy fiction. People can say that the Hobbit is a children's story and it is but that is ok. It has been with me for forty years and I read it every year along with The Lord of the Rings. I have read it for pleasure, to my daughter and my granddaughter and they love it as well. Each time I do read it there are points that will spark memories of times past when I was reading it then.

The hero of the book is an Everyman style hero with a love for the simple life but a secret yearning for more. He gets the adventure he never knew he dreamt of and develops friends from other races and lands. Is the story simple? Yes.. is the world immersive? Yes. and is it fun? Absolutely!

I really love this book, an easy read and the font, pages, and binding are good, but the cover came with this big ugly "now a motion picture" thing on it which is disappointing because I bought this item because I didn't think it would have that and a lot of the other affordable options did. Hopefully they update the picture so people can know. It's not a huge deal, I just hate those little things because they not even stickers you can remove, they're just part of the cover. Still a good book though, everyone should read it.

When I first picked up this book at the bookstore, with my parents, I didn't know what to expect. I decided to get The Hobbit because of its immense popularity. Being 7 years old at the time, this was one of my first 300+ page chapter books. The introduction was simple enough: A hobbit named Bilbo Baggins was sitting lazily outside his hobbit hole, with a long pipe, when the wizard, Gandalf, came by. Our first exposure to Gandalf is quite a bit different however. "Gandalf came by. Galdalf! If you heard only a quarter of what I heard about him, and I have only heard very little of what there is to hear, you would be prepared for any sort of remarkable tale." To the reader, Bilbo Baggins seemed the lazy type -- content with his quiet life, baking seedcakes, smoking pipes, and living in his father's enormous hobbit hole. One must question Gandalf's motives for choosing such a person to go on a daunting quest. The "daunting quest" is helping 13 dwarves, including the great Thorin Oakensheid, recapture their gold from the dragon, Smaug. Smaug smashed down on the merry village of Dale, utterly destroying the village itself, eating up all its inhabitants, and (to add insult to injury) taking all of the gold and moving it into the Lonely Mountain. Thorin himself was the grandson of The King Under the Mountain, and so was even more outraged at this attack. After eating most of his food, the dwarves sang a song, which made Bilbo feel many adventurous things. Hobbits do not normally even appreciate this type of music. Bilbo must use all of the qualities he never knew he had (i.e., bravery, wisdom, ingenuity, and unselfishness). Along the way, a major part of the book takes place in Bilbo's legendary meeting with Gollum, a peculiar underground creature who calls himself "My Precious". Here Bilbo picks up a magic ring that gives the wearer the power of invisibility. Now, to fully understand the curiousness of a hobbit going on an adventure, you may want to know details about them. Hobbits are half the height of humans, love to eat, dress in bright colors such as green and yellow, live in holes in the ground, and hate adventures or anything that is unpredictable. The Tooks are an exception to this, and are the unpopular relations of the Bagginses. This is why Bilbo has his "Tookish" side. Another amazing part is Bilbo's memorable confrontation with Smaug. I would recommend this book for all ages. As this was also the intended age, since J.R.R. Tolkien wrote this book for his children (unlike the darker, yet still fabulous Lord of the Rings). And many other children will probably also enjoy this book. Lastly, I have to say that my soft cover edition of The Hobbit has lasted four years, an amazing feat for a soft cover book.
