First, the 4 K picture quality is stunning! The natural scenery for Middle Earth makes these discs worthwhile. Howard Shore music never fails to please. For the movies themselves, Bilbo meeting the dwarves unexpectedly in his home was just so dead on. A bit of strain on the movies seemed there was lots of running and jumping scenes by the characters…almost to fill up movie time. Unlike others, I did enjoy the addition of the wood elf Tauriel. Her relationship with the dwarf Kili was intriguing. As for Smaug, I wish he was more dragon like with horns, spikes, and a different color. He seemed Disney cartoon like in appearance and also when he talked (although Vermithrax in Dragonslayer appeared more like a dragon, even though he also had only had four limbs). The Four limb (like a wyvern) dragons on Game of Thrones TV show were spectacular looking. I just can’t say the same for Smaug. My personal preference is dragons having six limbs. As for great characters, I did enjoy seeing our hero characters (same actors from The Lord of the Rings films ) Elrond, Lady Galadriel, and the not yet villian Saruman. Seeing Saruman as still a good character is intriguing and engaging. Saruman says to Gandalf “what threat?” “Let’s focus on what we know.” He is acting like a true researcher, focusing on the facts. Overall I greatly enjoy the movies and when I upgraded to 4 K, I did the right thing.
