But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

Perhaps it is the fact that the story is deceptively complex. Aided by a wizard Gandalf the dwarvish king Thorin Oakenshield seeks to drive a dragon out of his ancestral home. He and his companions hire a burglar, to help. The chosen burgler, Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit, a diminutive creature half the size of a human who knows a lot more about comfort, rest and good food than burgling. They set out on a journey, beset by trolls, goblins and bad weather, but aided by luck, elves, eagles and a shape shifter who can turn into a bear. Along the way Bilbo burgles, among other things, a magic ring which will turn him invisible.
There is friendship, betrayal, excitement, battle, all the makings of a great story... there is even a real thief.
This Amazon copy is about the tenth one I've bought. There seems to be an osmosis effect going on so that whenever I get a copy it ends up going home with one of my relatives or house guests. I have a sister who I suspect is related to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins (I know its hard to believe since she is so tall and wide), who's been banned from my house for nearly a decade. So I don't know who keeps borrowing copies.
As for the Pocket Edition, the print is very small and I would order a larger edition if I did it all over again. If you can't read books with smaller than normal font then don't buy this edition. The reason I bought this one is that I know my old, misplaced hard back edition will show up sooner or later, and I just wanted a cheap edition to begin reading to my 7 and 5 years old. But, they wanted to watch the movie and I insisted that we read it first. Don't let your kids watch the movies until they read the books!
The 7 y/o loved it and the 4 y/o liked it, but got a little bored during some of the slower parts or if we read it for too long at one sitting.

The print is very small; rather than keeping the font size and adding pages, it has the same number of pages with a smaller font. Personally I would have struggled to read it but fortunately my grandchild has no such problems.
The recipient claimed it was too big for a pocket but thanks to my raincoat I was able to demonstrate that it’s the perfect size, which made a great impression.

The book is small (pocket size), my hand is bigger than the book (I've a normal size hand). It fits perfectly in a small woman's purse.
The only con is the size of the letters, they are tiny (normal size in a pocket book) so if you don't like books with tiny letters this book isn't for you.
The hardcover is tough, simple and discrete: dark green with the title and author on the 'lateral' cover in golden letters.
The dust jacket is beautiful (as you can see in the product image), and the papper is not very fragile.
Has a Thoro's map at the beggining and the 'Wilderland' in the end of the book. I would like a bigger map, but is the pocket version and the places are legible and well drawn.
Inside the book has some (6 or 7) hand drawn illustrations of places. They're beutifully drawn. It's a great detail about the book.
I had no problems with the order and it arrived in 3 days (I am from Portugal).
I would recommend it to anyone who likes pocket books and is a Tolkien fan.

All in all I am more than pleased with my purchase and will be using this version to re-read nearer to when the movie reaches us next year!

Delivery was relatively fast: it arrived on the 1st day of the given arrival interval
The moment I opened the parcel I went: "Oh my gosh! it's soo tiny and cute!"
I mean it's a story about a tiny guy that you read in a tiny book: perfect! I did not expect it to be such a good looking little thing. It fits into my smallest shoulder bag and I ended up taking it with me everywhere I went, including on holiday.
