"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language.

Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels. This edition of The Hobbit has been specially formatted for young readers and features cover art by Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator Peter Sís.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

Written for Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

I love all of Tolkien's work and am glad to have a personal copy.

I recently read "The Hobbit" for only the second time in my life, and I have to argue with the people who say this is a children's book. I disagree wholeheartedly. Although there are elements of children's fantasy tales in the text, the themes and actions of "The Hobbit" are much more oriented to adults.
I won't waste time rehashing plot points with this iconic text; instead I will focus on some features that stuck out to me.
First off, if one is familiar with the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, I think their reading of "The Hobbit" will yield some interesting insights and they will catch some details that people not familiar with LOTR would miss. One can read, and greatly enjoy, "The Hobbit" as a standalone text, but I think it is much better when considered within the framework of LOTR.
Another observation that surprised me was just how unlikeable the dwarves are in this book. Tolkien frequently mentions in his other works that dwarves are foolish and selfish, and usually only do good works when prompted by circumstance, but on this reading of "The Hobbit" they greatly annoyed me. Perhaps because of how much they remind me of most of humanity. And maybe that was Tolkien's intent? An allegory for how humanity often only makes the right choice when goaded into it, as opposed to it being our first and natural instinct.
Although there are moments in the text that are a little slow going, they are few and far between, and Tolkien focuses much less on the minutia of detail about Middle Earth in this book as opposed to some of his others. I had also forgotten how action packed the last 100 pages or so of "The Hobbit" are. I was recently arguing with a friend that the decision to make the films of "The Hobbit" a trilogy was just greed as the book could not support 3 films. I was wrong, if the movies are well done, there is more than enough in this text to justify three films.
This rereading of "The Hobbit" has made me want to jump back into Middle Earth, and I sense that I will be picking up and rereading more of Tolkien in the very near future. As for "The Hobbit", I will gladly revisit Bilbo Baggins and his adventures again and again over the course of my lifetime. No greater praise can one give a book.

There are many covers, bindings, and font options available for The Hobbit, but I found this version to be lovely, sturdy, and clear to read. It's also survived my overzealous seven-year-old, and that, in itself, is quite the feat.

As for the actual book--it's content, I mean--there are plenty of reviews about what a wonderful, rich tale Tolkien's created. I can only add to what others have said by stating that this book meant enough to me, as a child (and now as an adult) to be one of those I couldn't wait to pass on to my own children (who, in turn, have embraced it fully).

The Hobbit is a great story, I couldn't put this book down. Bilbo Baggins was someone who would much rather stay home and enjoy himself. He is unexpectedly dragged into an adventure that makes him realize he is full of courage and wisdom.

Bilbo and his dwarf companions will take you on a journey, you will be impressed as you read about their encounters with trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and a giant dragon, as they have a quest to recover the lost treasure.

The author J.R.R. Tolkien is an excellent writer. This is a must read classic !!

Initial Thoughts:

Having never read a J.R.R. Tolkien novel, but being very well acquainted with his work through films, I was very excited to start reading The Hobbit. From the movies I knew Tolkien was a master storyteller, but it was an altogether new, different, and exciting experience to get to read the actual words he wrote.

Spoilers!

I'm definitely a fan of this kind of adventure novel, since some of my favorite books include Graceling (by Kristin Cashore) and Eragon (by Christopher Paolini). What I didn't expect was for each chapter to feel like a short story.

I've been really busy with school work, so it was nice to be able to lie down in bed around one in the morning and read a single chapter of Tolkien's work. Each chapter was a new adventure for the characters and I never felt rushed while reading. Some books carry me away, and before I know it I've spent the whole night reading and the whole next day at school regretting it (and to clarify that's regretting I'm at school, not regretting having stayed up all night to read). This novel was different in the sense that I was able to put it down and still feel completely satisfied with the story I'd read, even if it was only 15 pages.

The characters were comical and brave but I never felt a deep connection to any one person in particular, but I liked that because I was able to really view the story as an outsider, which is what I think Tolkien was going for. He includes the reader in the novel, which made it feel like a personal experience and like an honest storytelling, not just me sitting alone and reading a story.

Tolkien takes his time with descriptions; however I didn't feel like there was enough meat to this story overall. I think I set my expectations too high and was expecting an over the top, dramatic, battle and adventure that I've come to expect and recognize from the movies. Instead I was left feeling a bit underwhelmed. Biblo's journey is great, and it was a nice prequel to the real story but other than that I wasn't really moved and I was left wanting more (and yes I know that contradicts what I just said in the second paragraph...I'm still a bit confused as to how that works, but these are my feelings, I'm just going with it).

What I loved about this book and what I'll always remember is the feeling I had while reading. As I was reading I kept thinking, wow, I'd love to read this as a bedtime story to my kids one day. This is a perfect story that parents (and no I don't have children...someday I hope) and their kids can both enjoy.

Conclusion:

This was a light, fun read, with many moral lessons learned along the way. I enjoyed Biblo's journey, but I don't think I have the courage to try and read the next three Lord of the Rings books. I really loved Tolkien's writing style but I did feel like something was missing. I didn't find that spark that makes me fall head over heels for a book and I didn't connect with any characters the way I typically do.

There is no denying that this is an instant classic for me, but it's not one of my all time favorites. I'll be saving this book to share with my kids one day, and maybe that's the spark I was missing this time around. Maybe this book reads better with a companion.
