Hobby Creek was established in 2014 when we launched our first product, an improved Third Hand Kit. We were frustrated with the limitations of traditional Third Hand soldering tools and thought that some of the improved Third Hand Kits on the market lacked value and were of sub-par quality. Naturally we decided to create our own and now have an entire line of third hands built to help you with all of your hobby needs.
We have been busy innovating our products since then and Hobby Creek is proud to have launched our new and improved V2 line! Our V2 line offers products that have been completely overhauled and offer awesome new features! Including; Snap - Line arms, quick release swivel clips and so much more!
The Hobby Creek Third Hand comes fully assembled so you can focus your efforts on the project and not your tools! What’s in the box (4) Snap-line arms each with standard swiveling alligator clips (2) Extra Large Clips (10) clear silicon clip tips for the ultimate heat resistance (1) precision cut anodized base with anti-slip grip (1) lubricant for arm tunability

I decided to add a fifth arm, so I could mount a 120mm PC fan to blow fumes away from my projects. I struggled a little finding the arm I wanted, the 90 degree connector, and getting them all to work with the Hobby Creek base. So I wrote customer service for help. What I expected was a canned message stating that they didn't support that configuration or basically "after market modifications" would not be supported or something like that.
Instead what I got was a wonderful, brainstorming email exchange over the period of several days, on how to accomplish what I was looking for. I received a very thoughtful, extensive list on possible configurations, with links to other manufacturers, etc. Honestly, it felt like I was brainstorming with a close friend about a joint project.
Who does customer service like that?? Apparently Hobby Creek does ... and they have earned a customer and a fan, for life.
I can't recommend this product or Hobby Creek in general, enough.
If you are looking for holding something in precise locations, you would probably be better off purchasing multiple rigid-arm helping hand devices as opposed to this. If you just want to hold many different things in general locations, this device will probably work for you.
Much more versatile than typical helping hands; can hold many things at odd angles
Expandable for more arms
Arms are nearly impossible to position precisely
Arms cannot be tightened in any way to securely hold in a specific position
Spring-back (When arms "spring back" toward their previous position):
All of these things have some spring-back. There three ways you can minimize it:
1) When the device arrives, work all of the segments on all of the arms. This loosens them up just a little so they glide instead of stick.
2) Use two hands (or one) and the whole arm when adjusting. If you just poke it with your fingers, it will spring back. Manipulate it with purpose!
3) Hobby Creek sells arm lube! They claim it lowers the holding power, but if you aren't holding heavy items, this may be the best bet.
This one performs better than the goose-neck variety because you can't lube or loosen goose-neck.
Alligator clips are too small/don't open wide enough.
Yes they do.
Seriously though, if you MUST have something larger, they are just normal clips crimped on to the arms. Grab two pliers, pull them out, shove in some larger clips.
I was a bit skeptical with the plastic arms, as I'm doing soldering and using a hot gun for shrink wrap, but so far no damage. Having the four hands is nice, they stay in place nicely after you get them adjusted. They are a bit awkward to adjust, but not any worse than anything else. You have to play with things a bit to get them to stay where you want them and not spring back.
I have successfully built a couple boards with them, so overall I like the better than any of the others I've tried over the last 30 years.
Definitely would recommend them.
Now the holy grail would be something that held exactly, and never sprung back after adjusting them, but I don't think those exist . . . yet.
