Product Description

A train pulls into the station it's the end of the line. A hobo jumps from a freight car hoping for a fresh start in a new city. Instead, he finds himself trapped in an urban hell. This is a world where criminals rule the streets and Drake, the city's crime boss, reigns supreme alongside his sadistic murderous sons, Slick & Ivan. Amidst the chaos, the hobo comes across a pawn shop window displaying a secondhand lawn mower. He dreams of making the city a beautiful place and starting a new life for himself. But as the brutality continues to rage around him, he notices a shotgun hanging above the lawn mower... Quickly, he realizes the only way to make a difference in this town is with that gun in his hand and two shells in its chamber...

A movie that truly lives up (or is that down?) to its title, Hobo with a Shotgun brings on the giggly ick with a zeal that recalls the glory days of legendary exploitation mavens Troma Studios (The Toxic Avenger, Surf Nazis Must Die, Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid, etc.). Beginning with an awesome Ennio Morricone homage, the film follows the nameless title character (Rutger Hauer) as he hops a train to a new town with dreams of buying a lawnmower and settling down, only to run afoul of an evil drug kingpin and his two severely messed-up sons. Disgusted by the level of corruption surrounding him, he stumbles into a sporting goods store and… well, the title tells you the rest, really. Expanding on his notorious short of the same name (the winner of a trailer contest originated by Grindhouse's Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez), writer-director Jason Eisener maintains a delicate balance between black comedy and ridiculously gross money shots, with precious little of the downtime between inspired gags that plagues so many films of its type. Anchored by Hauer's more-committed-than-it-probably-needed-to-be performance, this assuredly guilty pleasure ranks as a real rarity: a tribute to '80s VHS trash that functions beyond mere parody. Keep your thumb poised near the rewind button at all times. --Andrew Wright

Really liked this movie. Yes it's violent and over the top, but hey, this is grindhouse. The characters are wonderful and almost every one is iconic in their own right. The movie makers created a gritty world with strange and twisted people mostly committing vile acts. Kind of like if Troma had made Robocop. This was less of an homage to grindhouse movies of the 70's and 80's and more like an actual grindhouse movie. The film had bright bleeding colors and harsh contrast that helped to give this film a very uniquely gritty look. There were lots of scenes of murder, mutilation and torture, but there were also scenes in this movie that elevate it to something more than a "B" horror movie. The hobos talk to the newborns, a certain death scene, the Plague, and even the wickedness of the main bad guy. This was definitely a grindhouse flick and more. Looking forward to seeing more from this director and crew.

With a name like Hobo with a Shotgun, you get exactly what's advertised; a hobo roaming an infested city with a shotgun attempting to clean its streets of the filth that inhabits it. The story is obviously simple and if the movie has intrigued you in any way, then you probably weren't attracted to it for the story alone. Rutger Hauer is more than likely a drawing factor. The guy has talent and just seems to have trouble picking the right project to be a part of. Hobo with a Shotgun could definitely be considered over the top, but its ridiculously memorable one liners, low budget exploitation atmosphere, and nonstop use of practical effects for gore make you realize that even though Rutger Hauer is getting up there in years he is still capable of picking entertaining projects to be a part of every now and then.

There aren't too many one-liners that can be shared due to them being insanely vulgar as you can imagine, but there are a few that can be squeezed in here. "I'm going to wash this blood off with your blood!" One of the greatest aspects of the movie is that everything has this tongue in cheek kind of feel to it, so there's a sense of it not being taken completely seriously even though the actions on screen are fantastically gruesome and the entire cast seems to do their best to give a riveting performance. "I'm gonna sleep in your bloody carcasses tonight!" Rutger Hauer is the heart and soul of the movie. Without him the movie would've just been completely senseless. Hauer at least tries (and succeeds the majority of the time) of making you feel sympathy for this hobo who just wants to start a business for himself and do what he thinks is best for the city he's currently in. "You and me are goin' on a car ride to hell... and you're riding shotgun!

Disclaimer: I viewed this film as a streaming rental, and as such, cannot comment on the audio or visual quality of the product. My review is concerned with the entertainment quality of the film only.

Those viewers who consider the lawnmower slaughter scene at the end of Dead Alive to be pure cinematic brilliance, or chuckled at the gold-standard black comedy of Danny Trejo rappelling down the side of a building using the entrails of his last victim for rope in Machete, will doubtless find all their movie needs met in 'Hobo with a Shotgun', a film that really needs no introduction because...well, because the title sort of gives the whole thing away anyway. Both the title and the cover art are important here: this is a definite 'what you see is what you get', so if exploitation and trash cinema do not appeal to you, THEN YOU SHOULD NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. If, on the other hand, you feel as though 98% of films do not go far enough while exploring the limits of sadistic gore and violence, then don't wait, run to your nearest outlet and feast on the utter lunacy of 'Hobo with a Shotgun'.

For what it is, I really can't think of any other film that I've seen that tops 'Hobo'. I can't claim to have seen all the classics of trash cinema, but I have seen a lot of bad exploitation, and as far as acting abilities and effects, 'Hobo' is at the very top. Rutger Hauer is as good here as he's ever been, and even if some of the rest of the cast can't quite measure up, that's no more than usual for the standard formula for these films.

Spider-Man ran out of silk and fell to his death mid air. Superman's steel is rusty. Batman has retired. James Bond's license to kill has been revoked. Kick-Ass got his ass kicked. The streets are ablaze with crime and corruption, and a new breed of superhero is in town... a nameless vigilante cashing in his quarters for a new way of life. A Hobo... With a Shotgun.

I recall seeing Grindhouse on its opening day, and when Hobo With a Shotgun showed, I laughed myself silly!!! It was probably the funniest of the fake trailers, and most agreed. Cut to 3 years later, and Hobo With a Shotgun has been made as a movie!! As you can imagine I anticipated its release and saw it Monday, and loved it!!!

A nameless Hobo gets off a train in a town called Hope Town, hoping to start a new life. He tries to save whatever money he can get for a lawnmower so he can start a business to mow people's lawns. However, the streets are full of corruption and violence, ruled by a ruthless psycho named Drake and his two sons.

However, one day, a new life automatically starts for the hobo when having struggled enough to get the money, he goes to buy the lawnmower and a robbery occurs. He notices the shotgun on the wall, uses it to shoot the robbers, and leaves one alive to tell the tale. With the help of a tired hooker named Abbey, this angry hobo will not stop until Drake and his empire are dead!

Hobo with a Shotgun is fun from the first frame. It is short and sweet, it is sickeningly violent and hilarious!!! There's buckets of blood and gore spilled, there's lots of dark humour, there's great acting and it is VERY Canadian. This film is evidence that Canadian cinema is some of the best around.

I was also surprised at the amount of heart it had too.
