We have used Hodgson Oat Bran for many years. We have it almost every morning. Have tried other brands but they just don't measure up to Hodgson. I thought "Oat bran is oat bran, right? What could be different?" But we learned there IS a difference, and we BY FAR prefer the taste and texture of Hodgson. And Amazon's price is great!

I cook it in the microwave. I don't use as much water as the box calls for; but you'll have to experiment to see what you like best. In my microwave, one serving (in an 18-oz cereal bowl) takes a bit more than 2 minutes at 50% power -- it will boil over on Hi. We usually serve it slightly sweetened, with a little butter and cinnamon. We often add blueberries.

But I have discovered that I can make "grits" with this, too -- I know, I know... grits are made from corn. Sometimes I use a 50/50 mix of oat bran and grits, but sometimes all oat bran. I cook the oat bran with less water than usual, add a little butter and salt, and it has a taste and texture similar to grits. In a 1-qt bowl, enough for 2 servings takes 3-4 minutes on Hi.

I also add oat bran to muffins, pancakes, etc. Great product!

Hodgson Mill Oat Bran is a staple in my house hold. I follow a body building/fitness lifestyle, and this is something I have for breakfast every day. This stuff swells up and makes a huge protion, without packing on additional calories.
I normally cook it in the microwave in a large bowl at 80% power for 6 minutes. 40 grams oat bran, and 1 1/2 cups water.. not all water added at once, but 1/2 a cup of water at time. Stirring it every minute or so. Make sure you keep an eye on it because it can over flow easily.. Let it sit for about 15 minutes after cooking. I then add 1 scoop of Chocolate protein powder to it. It makes it taste like Chocolate Malt O Meal. So good for a pre workout meal or post workout meal.
I subscribed for autoship on this product here on Amazon.. SO excited as I can only get this a one certain grocery store here in town, and normally they are out of it.
One thing I noticed is that the calories on the packate dont quite add up. It adds up to 3 calories per gram on the box, but, in reality its 3.32 calories per gram. I find that a lot of products information like this dont quite add up, so I always double check.. no biggie.

This oat bran makes for an ideal, well-rounded breakfast. Not only is it healthier than regular oatmeal, but it also tastes better. Higher in both fiber and protein, it also seems to keep me fuller longer than regular oatmeal. Although it is a bit more difficult to prepare than instant oatmeal, the results are in every way worth it. Also much cheaper to buy this oat bran in bulk on Amazon than buying it individually in the grocery store. If you suffer from irregularity, religiously eating this oat bran on a daily basis very much seems to help. My blood sugar also does not seem to spike or otherwise be affected after eating this oat bran. In truth, I think oat bran is nothing less than a miracle food--with this brand in particular being well worth the money. It would be nice if they had a specifically gluten free version of this oat bran, although so far I have had zero issues (FYI, I am only slightly sensitive to gluten, and am not in fact gluten intolerant).

I have never eaten cold cereal with milk on it, and rarely eat cold cereal at all due to the sugar and other ingredients I can't pronounce. Oat bran is a healthier alternative, but it needs a little dressing up flavor-wise. First off, I add a tablespoon of milled flaxseed to the water and oat bran before heating--it prevents the starchy goo that develops from cooked oats, and makes a little drier, stiffer concoction (besides adding some extra nutrition, so I'm told). Wheat germ has the same effect as the flax, but I avoid eating wheat.

For flavor after cooking, I stir in unsweetened applesauce, cinnamon, and stevia. For a snack, I top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and pretend it's apple crisp a la mode.

I'm open to more suggestions, since I've still got 10 of the 12 boxes to eat. Post your comments, please!

I've tried Quaker, Trader Joe's, Bob's Red Mill and Old Wessex. I like Hodgson the best. It has a little more texture than the rest, a slight way toward the texture of steel cut oats.
Hodgson states that its serving size is 1/4 cup but I still go with 1/3 cup. I make it with almond milk or skim milk in the microwave. After it almost bubbles over, I let it sit for 3-4 minutes (which nets me the best texture).
I usually eat it with a heaping tablespoon of peanut flour for added protein (added and mixed in before milk...also add extra milk) (or peanut butter added after cooking) and, if I have them, frozen wild blueberries (added after cooking) (the wild ones are small and defrost quickly). Unless you count the natural sugars in the peanut flour or blueberries, I've totally kicked my morning sugar habit...on days I eat oat bran!

So wholesome and warming you could just stay home and read a book all day after a nice hot bowl of oat bran cereal instead of going to work, but that warm feeling is okay where I work so I go in as planned. Caution - use enough water and cook it long enough! I use 1 cup water to 1/4 cup dry grain and I cook on moderately high till it bubbles then turn the heat to very low and let it cook for about 5 minutes. I always use butter and I use varying fruits including apples and strawberries added before cooking. It is also really good with a heaping tablespoon of full fat plain yogurt and a few nuts and then milk of some sort of course.
