Because we were doing remodeling, I was just started to do Re-poting of our cactus. Upon opening, I noticed that the soil mix was fully covered with fungus and mold. Contacted Hoffman and they told me that this soil mix had to on the shelf a long time. I am beyond the point of returning it.
So, Keep this in mind before purchasing.

This mix is hydrophobic. It repels water when dry. And if you do water it when it's dry, what happens is, the lighter particles float to the top as water puddles into a large bubble which slowly sinks in. So it displaces your top soil layer each time you water. It does not equally wet all parts of the soil because of this hydrophobicity (which forms large pools of water surrounded by a dry cake of soil). It is absolutely impossible to equally water all parts of the soil unless you want to spend more time than necessary to water your plants.

I usually don't write reviews, but this is one of the worst soil mixes I have dried.

I was not fond of this soil for succulents and neither were my succulents. The water puddles on the soil and takes forever to soak in then the succulents just sit in soppy wet soil. There is barely any perlite in it. It is also hardens around the roots and dries in clumps either starving the roots of water or keeping the roots in soggy clumps of soil. I ended up ordering the Gritty Soil mix from Bonsai Jack which I love. I didn't want the soil to go to waste so now I make my own mix with 50% perlite, 40% gritty mix soil, and 10% of this cactus soil - succulents are flourishing in this new mixture. Also there was a lot of problems with the shipping of the soil which was also very frustrating.

High content of large pieces of mulch

Very disappointed in Amazon to see this one listed as their recommended choice, it will make me think twice when taking their recommendations in the future. Like the other reviewers said, the mix is surely very hydrophobic, but more disappointing than that is the high content of large pieces of bark in it, it seems like at least a third of the mix consists of basically mulch, and big pieces at that that cannot be broken up with your hands. I've lost a few cactuses to it already and it has successfully impeded the rooting of various echeveria leaves that I've had no trouble rooting in other mixes. Even cutting it with equal parts vermiculite and sand does not yield a suitable medium. SMH.

I put this with my cactus that I had for over a year. It was growing so much it needed a new pot and more dirt. I replanted using this soil and within a week my cactus was dead. I don't understand. It went from green to just white. No life left. I was so upset.

Not enough drainage material in soil mix for aeration and drainage. Soil mass seems to compact easily after several watering and pulls away from sides of pot. Had to be aerated manually. The coarse materials present are 1/4 in. to 3/8 in. stones and twigs 1/2 to 3/4 in. length. Would have preferred to add more clean coarse sand to the peat mixture, or prepare my own mix for succulents.

My indoor cacti and succulents love this soil, I mix it in with a small bit of stones and drainage rocks at the bottom of their pots and do a light watering once a week as it drains VERY well while still providing them with the nutrients and bit of liquid they need.
