Finally! Another excellent Blanco County mystery! This series is so good. They are fun books! I actually laugh out loud when reading them. This one has the same great characters and some new interesting ones also. I like that the main character, John Marlin doesn't have a lot of conflict in his own life, he is a good man and there isn't that intensity that comes when the game wardens have politics to put up with in some other books. I'll be looking forward to the show on USA that they're making based on the series!

This guy writes Texan. His characters have the Texas mindset, his plotline is right out of the Central Texas hill country. Pig hunting for fun and profit. Dead high school quarterback. NCAA violations. Sociopaths visiting from out of town. John Marlin, game warden and part time deputy, deals with all of those strange goings on while at the same time enjoying the latest vintage from a hill country vineyard. A well put together book with enough seeming dead ends to make it interesting. Oh, I forgot to mention the Russian actress turned most alluring sports "consultant." A really good read.

I have enjoyed all of the books by this author so far.

This one, like the others, is a light mystery that doesn't stretch the imagination too far. But it does offer enough twists and sup-plots to keep the reader interested.

This type of story takes one out of their daily lives long enough to enjoy the possible arrays of a different ways of living and different ways of viewing the world.

I look forward to the next book, eager to return to Blanco.County.

Ted

I'm ashamed to say I've had this book on my Kindle for a while now and just now got around to reading it. What a story! Great characters and a good plot that kept me hooked all the way to the end. Anybody who has spent anytime around the Texas Hill Country or has met any good ol' boys will feel right at home in Blanco County with Billy Don, Red O'Brien, John Marlin and the rest of the crowd Ben Rehder brings to life in this excellent tale. TRy it, you'll be hooked too.

I don't review every book I read, because I read a lot and writing a thoughtful review takes time. However, when I saw that some reviewer panned this book for not being well-written, I just had to step to provide a more useful review to help potential readers make up their minds about buying this book. In short, if you like humorous mysteries, I highly recommend it along with the rest of Ben's series.

What this book is: A well-written, humorous mystery. If you've read Ben's previous books, you'll be familiar with the characters. If not, the main character is a down-to-earth Game Warden who has a knack for investigation. Two bumbling red necks who can't seem to keep themselves out of trouble provide the main comic relief.

In Hog Heaven, two of Texas' favorite pastimes, football and hunting, figure prominently in the story. The life of a rising high school football star is cut short when he collides with a pig. The tragedy first appears to be an accident, but some surprise findings indicate that the cause may have been more serious. Although the book is funny, it draws attention to serious issues with college recruiting that have been in the news recently.

I happen to live within close proximity of Blanco County and can testify that Ben has captured the spirit of the locals well.

I don't know much about football, professional or college level, but that didn't prevent me from thoroughly enjoying every page of this book. I like intense - though not gory - murder mysteries, but I also really enjoy ones that are just plain fun but well written, and this one fits that category. I will definitely read more by this author. Other reviewers have outlined the story, so I won't do that, but I will say that the book was much better than I expected and I will definitely read more by this author. It takes a real talent to treat a topic such as murder with the seriousness it deserves and yet still get some laughs in there and Ben Rehder manages that with seeming ease. All the characters seemed authentic and I learned a bit about recruiting football players and Texas in a way that was interesting with no drawn out rambles. I skip a lot of paragraphs in many of the books I read, but this was not the case in Hog Heaven, and the humour was light and genuinely funny because it's embedded in the characters, as opposed to some authors who seem to throw lines in their books that sound like they came from a stand up comedy routine. This book is smart and it's fun so I highly recommend it. i look forward to reading more by Ben Rehder.

Fun and funny, bad decisions compounded to hilarious heights but always with some real danger and serious outcomes where the bad guys go to jail. You'll come to root for the good guys, even the pair of rednecks who mostly mean well but just can't quite seem to get it right. Rehder's Blanco County series is the most fun I've had reading in ten years! And I always have a book on the nightstand. Highly recommended fiction, modern day rural Texas game warden law enforcement funny.

This author writes with such humor plus making the book a definite mystery. You must read his other book also. His characters were so well described, you actually feel like you know them. Or have known someone like them. Will watch for any new books he comes out with as I enjoyed this read.
