Yes, we probably should have been divorced a long time ago. We committed to make a happy and enduring union, but we just couldn’t find our way back to happy no matter how hard we tried. At times we were hanging in there just to bug each other..
When we finally reached a breaking point we somehow found Dr. Sue’s book Hold me Tight and learned it was normal(!) for many couples to fall into conflict over fears of being left, or not needed or feeling unimportant to each other and then to get stuck reacting to each other in ways that just confirm and reinforce those fears and increase our sense of failure and loneliness. That was us for sure.
While we did as much as we could on our own; read hold me tight over and over and to each other, tried to have the conversations it introduced, sometimes succeeding, sometimes getting really, really stuck, when we realized we needed more help we signed up for a hold me tight workshop and spent an amazing week with Sam Jinich and the lovely and talented Michelle Gannon in Big Sur and got the support we needed to reach a big moment of forgiveness and healing.
In addition to Michelle’s calming presence, the workbook they provided was what helped us the most. Not that I would trade our experience that week for the world, but I think we could have gotten a lot further on our own if we had a workbook like that when we first read the book. Now we do!
Thank you Dr. Sue for making this available to couples who might feel helplessly stuck now but can find their way back to each other with a little hope and great tools like this!
