This is A Love and Order Novel and can be read as a standalone. I have not read any of the others in this series and I wasn't lost when it read this one.
Eli Walker is a detective for NYPD when he is called to Annalise Bernett's family shop for a robbery and assault.
From what I can gather Eli isn't a man whore he just isn't looking for a relationship and isn't one to turn down want is offered. No one woman has really snagged his attention, until Annalise who is the total opposite of the women he has been with.
Annalise isn't looking for a relationship either having gotten out of a abusive one two years ago, but she can't stop thinking about the handsome Detective Walker.
Since Eli can't stop thinking about her either he just sucks it up and asks her out.
These two fit together so well, he is the exact opposite of her ex and makes her feel safe, even if he is bossy, and she is the exact opposite in that she's not aggressive and she makes him feel level headed and calm.
Even though they fit together they have things going against them, they are a mixed race couple and even though it's 2016 there are still people out there that give them crap about it and Annalise's ex is stalking her.
I enjoying getting to see Eli in is element as a police officer with the cases that he works and seeing Annalise in her element as a writer when we see her having to dealing with traveling for book signings.
The fear that Annalise feels when her ex has her and the pain that she and Eli feel in the hospital is so real it brought tears to my eyes!!
I will say it again, these two belong together!! He is her savior and she is the calm in his storm.
I received this book for an honest review.
Holding Fast by Jeanine Binder
Holding Fast is a great romance with story for anyone looking for a quick light stand alone read. Eli and Ainsley were well developed characters and I enjoyed the story being told from both perspectives. The author did a wonderful job of addressing potential issues of an interracial couple. The supporting characters were all very well written with each having their own voice. Eli was different from the typical Alpha male in romance novels as he came off as having a much more softer vulnerable side, likely due to his work with the NYPD. Ainsley's character came off as strong and level headed in spite of a past abusive relationship. Jeanine Binder was able to write characters will relatable and believable backstory that have such a depth in such a short amount of space I am amazed. I also loved that this story wasn't an insta-love. While Eli and Ainsley's romance was quickly paced it developed at a very real rate.
The story was well paced and kept my interest however it is short, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I did find the action sequence felt a bit rushed as I expected more of a dramatic play to that event in the book. While I didn't feel like the book was rushed I did wish there were more to read. (Which is just what every great author shots for, a reader wanting more!)
I look forward to her other books
Prior to reading this book I didn't realize it was part of the 'A Love and Order Novel' series. It is easily a stand alone book. I haven't ready any of the other books in the series and wasn't lost at all when reading this book.
Eli (Elijah) Walker is a NYPD detective. He meets Ainsley Barnett when she is victim of a crime in her father's deli shop. She's running the shop while her father is recovering from an injury. She is actually a full time writer (love that!). Eli shows he might have a little bit of an anger management issue going on when he hits the punk that is beating Ainsley. Truth is because of his childhood he has a really hard time dealing with men that beat up women.
Eli's job is his life, through his work he has seen/dealt with some very ugly situations. He does not do relationships. He is a player. By the author's description of him he is a seriously 'hot' alpha male.
Ainsley comes into the precinct to say Thank you to Eli and to offer both him and his partner, Leon a free tab for life in the deli. She is blond, shy and beautiful.
There is just something about her that pulls at Eli. He is absolutely captivated. Neither Ainsley or Eli have been in a mixed-race relationship before.
Ainsley has an ex-boyfriend that abused her and she is super cautious. Eli does talk her into going out with him and he can sense he needs to move really slow.
We travel along on Eli/Leon's cases and on Ainsley's book tour. The author does a great job in making you feel like your are right there seeing the story unfold.
Ainsley is being stalked and Eli does everything in his power to protect her but she still gets abducted.
I was so afraid for her and cheered so loudly for her when she was so tough and got herself free and was able to call for help.
Kudos to Eli for being strong for Ainsley and stepping back so everything could go by the book with the investigation.
He curbed his Alpha Male and proved just how much she meant to him.
I was surprised by how much ugliness bi-racial relationships still have to deal with in 2016. Good Job to the author for bringing some attention to this very tough topic.
I was into this book so much that I even cried at a wedding that was going on in the book. I, Seriously was into this book. The story line was great, it was 'real'. I felt it was very, very well written.
If I could rate this book higher than 5 stars I would. It earned it! Great job Jeanine Binder! I'm a new follower of yours.
