About the Author

Dare Wright (1914-2001) was a fashion model and photographer based in New York City. In 1957, she used her childhood doll Edith and two teddy bears as the subjects of her first book The Lonely Doll. The combination of mesmerizing black and white photographs and simple, eloquent text made the book an immediate success. A year later, she brought Edith and The Bears back in Holiday For Edith And The Bears, which Wright photographed in one of her favorite places, North Carolina’s remote Ocracoke Island. Both books made The New York Times Best Seller list and Wright went on to achieve the publication of eighteen other popular stories that have been loved by three generations of children and their parents. Edith, Little Bear and Mr. Bear did all of their own stunts while shooting the books in which they played starring roles. They were soaked in the surf, nudged by ponies and rescued from the ocean. More than half a century after their adventures, the three are living together happily in semi-retirement. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Anyone who loved "The Lonely Doll" will love this book. The same wonderful elements are here again: Little Bear's urchin personality, Mr. Bear's gentle, nurturing, and paternalistic presence, Edith's endearing big sister struggles with her impetuous ursine brother. There is an enduring sense of family in these stories, a realism of image and characterization that is compelling. The photographs are a feast, so well staged and so in harmony with the choice brevity of the text that one would be hard put to decide which is more effective. For this reason -- imho -- Dare Wright's books have no equal in the genre. Some have frowned at an alleged darkness in these stories. It would be a sensitive child indeed to wonder about Edith's presence in the bears' lives; surely an insensitive one not to be enchanted instead by the credibility of the world they inhabit. Remember the classic fairy tales invariably included a measure of danger. Dare Wright's books also seek to teach that there are consequences to bad behavior. But this is done with thoughtfulness and an appreciation for her characters' innocence that readers are drawn back again and again. Her voice truly is her own. How lucky we are to have such books and particularly these books again in print. I remember watching auctions on the secondary market for battered editions of this title reach three digits. If you appreciate children's literature for the rare artistry the genre requires, and are unfamiliar with her work, don't wait any longer. This and her other gems are sure to find a special place in your child's library -- or your own.

I love these mesmerizing Edith and Mr Bear books and am happy there are affordable reissues printed. However, I was disappointed in the photo quality of the one I got - the photos were printed too light and washed out, not like the original which I also own.

I loved this series of books when I was a child, so naturally I ordered them to read to my children! It was exactly as I remembered and my daughter loves the story of Edith and the Bears. It wasn't until I was an adult that I learned there is some controversy surrounding the series (specifically The Lonely Doll) but I think that it's just people pushing their own issues onto the characters. The stories are simple and to the point. Edith and Baby Bear act as immature children do and Mr. Bear is the "adult" figure in the trio. Also, these stories were created in the 50's, so there is none of the over-thought, politically correct lessons that you find in a lot of the modern children's books. Just fun little stories. My kids and I enjoy these books and I'll be ordering more. The book that I ordered from this seller came in great condition, brand new.

As a child who grew up on the books by Dare Wright, I remember being transfixed by the images and story. As an adult sharing this book with my nieces, I was equally spellbound by the photography and the Magic of how Dare Wright brought her dolls and bears to life. Everyone who goes on a summer vacation can relate to wanting to not wanting to leave, Edith is no different. This is a fun book for children, but I would also suggest this book if you have anyone interested in photography as the images are amazing.

I was so glad to see a reprint of this book whose images still haunted me from early childhood. The pic of baby bear in the horses pen, the oar floating away - these had caused me great emotional turmoil as a tot. Others, like climbing on the "shipwreck", were burned into my visual memory and opened up a vault of memories when I saw them again after so long. I only wish they had decided to go with hardcover and glossy pages. The price can't be beat, but I'm tempted to still keep my eyes open for an original.

I've loved this series for years, but in this reprint, the photos, spectacular in the original books, are a mere whitewash. Most disappointing. What were they thinking? I returned it.

Favorites books as a child, I wore the library copies out. It is so great to read these old favorites again. I loved the stories as a child and now appreciate the art as an adult.
