At first, I was mad. Im all for detail and appreciate a characters back story. But this went waaaaaaayyyyyy back with all the main players. I don't know if It was because I was reading against time or what but the fact that I was reading about a tween girl, and some prepubesent boys throwing a football around and this raggedy old car, speakers in the window etc etc etc....it all bothered me.
THEN S*** HAPPENED!
I had threatened to never open up this book in my kindle again....then Kay Kay's innocence was stolen from her and Manny lost his mind. At that moment I felt compelled to keep reading because I had to know what happened to these CHILDREN (they literally were children). And Im glad I did!
Its been a looong time since I really connected with the characters infront of me like I did the crew. As time went on and I continued to read, I found myself appreciating the drawn out beginning. I feel like it was the authors way of making you feel his characters. I found myself feeling like I literally watched them come up from the projects to Par 6. So when they had a good time, I was all smiles and laughing at the antics of this put together family. When they had drama, my adreneline was rushing too and I found myself speed reading to keep up with the pace of how things happened. And when they felt pain.....because I was so invested....yeah I felt so bad. There was more than once I had to put my device down to regroup from what had just gone down.
Its so many twist and turns and stuff you just dont even see coming, coming at you! The Holland Family Saga is full of action, drama, laughs, tears, sex, money, drugs, heartbreak and most importantly LOVE.
It all makes sense in the end!
My name is K Sherrie,
And I approve this read!
As others mentioned some characters could have been left out( the rapper, some of the foot soldiers, Katrina's mom coming to the drug house, etc).
I came up in the 90's, I wasn't in the game, but I would hate to think that this was the way for a woman to show her loyalty (by sleeping with everybody and feeling like it is ok). If so I know a bunch of chicks that need to be getting a check because I know they crazy as he!! by now.
There were some good twist and turns in this book, but just too long and drawn out.
After reading the book I did some research and saw that the accounts in this book were accurate with what was going on in the NO around this time period( I know nerd👓📚📖), but for that I give a star. I like when art imitates life.
Katrina Sanders is a beautiful little girl who wants nothing more than to be loved by her mother like all little girls. Problem is due to circumstances beyond Katrina's control she can not attain that love that she wants and desires so much so she has to get that love from somewhere else. Manny Taylor and his mother Joyce would show Katrina what the true meaning of family is.
Manny Taylor Jr. is a teenager who has to live the life of the man of the household. Living with his mother after his father was taken from his life way too early has made Manny become a man early on. Doing the only thing that he knows to do to survive, Manny understands family and has his blood family plus his street family and there is nothing that he won't do to protect either of them.
Ben Holland has been living with his aunt since his parents died when he was young. When Ben becomes a teen and his aunt realizes that he is nothing more than kinship to her, Ben is forced to live on the streets and learn about life. Ben soon meets Manny and becomes fast friends and realizes that this friendship is more family that he has experienced and this is what he needs to survive. This friendship fast grows into a larger family and everyone experiences love and loyalty. Learning the true meaning of ride or die, this begins the Holland Family Saga.
The Holland Family Saga has many characters that contribute to make this a very good book. You have drama that sends you on an emotional rollercoaster and that makes for an exciting action packed read. I believe the word Saga is fitting in this title because it means a long and complicated series of events but it comes to a head and when it does it is explosive! I have enjoyed this novel by Black and I look forward to the next book in this series.
