I read this book in one sitting, I couldn't put it down, and now that I've finished it I don't want to let it go, and wish there was more to read.
It's got everything, excitement, magic, fantasy, it's written so that boys and girls will read it. The setting is special, the characters are special.
I can't work out whether this is a totally mutually written book between Carole and John, or whether ideas are from one and writing from the other, but it's a partnership that really works.
This book does what all good books should do - it is a great story which kids should want to read. Best of all, it's a movie begging to be made.
I can't wait for the second book in the trilogy.
I highly recommend this book for children, but also for anyone who loves a good fantasy story.
The Barrowman siblings can tell a story and I personally think with the next one Bone Quill coming out
soon they will be on their way. Combining a writer who understands the target audience and character
development with a superb actor who knows how to move a story along on film and now in print!
Well, I was impressed and I appreciate that 18 dead zoobies were not needed in the writing of this
book...seems there is a zombie everywhere I look in bookstores and online...helping kids who love to read
providing old fashion (sorry) values and making them relate to heroic characters which are a little down and to the left?
GREAT! These books deserve a really great editor....and my nephew is impossible to please....
Great setting, Scotland, the childhood home of the authors, also brother and sister, and Scottish mythical creatures, which we see very little of in fantasy books. I had to look them up! And I thought I was good on that subject!
I've heard people compare the story genre to Harry Potter, but I'm going to have to disagree. I get a Barbara Michaels feel from it, as well as The Adept series from Katherine Kurtz. Really didn't get any Harry from it.
This is suitable for younger and older readers alike. I am a fan of John Barrowman - well more a geek for Capt. Jack Harkness really - and having watched a few interviews with him, I love how Matt's character has a hint of John in him. Really subtle, but there.
Interesting story, awesome premise and great plot that kept me turning the pages not wanting to stop reading. I'm not sure I completely buy that 12yr olds could pull off some of the stunts these kids did, hence the 4.5 stars. Maybe I underestimate today's 12yr olds though.
Still, great book. I look forward to the next in the series!
Thank you for the excellent adventure!! :)
With the background provided by the first book I expect that the next book in the series will be very enjoyable and entertaining.
I found the book enjoyable and intriguing enough to then buy the sequel 'Bone Quill'.
Be aware tho, as you get immersed in these books that they are part of a trilogy & the third one
has not yet been released. I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
