About the Author

Adrienne Vaughan has been making up stories since she could speak; primarily to entertain her sister Reta, who from a very early age never allowed a plot or character to be repeated – tough audience. As soon as she could pick up a pen, she started writing them down. It was no surprise she wanted to be a journalist; ideally the editor of a glossy music and fashion magazine, so she could meet and marry a pop star – some of that came true – and in common with so many, still holds the burning ambition to be a ‘Bond Girl’! She now runs a busy PR practice and writes poems, short stories and ideas for books, in her spare time. She is a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and a founder member of the indie publishing group The New Romantics4. Adrienne lives in Leicestershire with her husband, two cocker spaniels and a retired dressage horse called Marco. The Hollow Heart is her debut novel. The sequel, A Change of Heart, is currently being scribbled down at every available moment.

I very much enjoyed reading this debut novel. I liked the pace of the story and loved the evocative descriptions of the Irish landscape, in which you could almost taste and smell the sea. The main character Marianne is an independent, enthusiastic journalist who you could identify and empathise with, particularly regarding the challenges she faced. The descriptions of evenings spent in the local pub in Ireland were very amusing together with the characters that Marianne met, who lived and worked locally and whose lives she became so entwined with.
This novel has a bit of everything - romance, sadness, glamour and adventure - a thoroughly enjoyable read !

I could not get interested in the story. The characters were not memorable and the story was difficult to follow. The story had so many characters and sub plots that I lost interest and did not finish

The Hollow Heart is the first book in the Heartfelt series. It features reporter Marianne Coltrane and begins with her work at the Chesterford Chronicle where her latest scoop uncovers the illegal sale of babies from a refuge for single pregnant women. Once the story breaks Marianne finds herself being awarded Journalist of the Year for her stolen babies expose.

It's at the awards she meets dependable George Brownlow MP. With a twist, destiny plunges Marianne through a series of cruel disasters and it's not until she decides to take a break and escape to the Island of Innishmahon off of the Irish coast, that she begins to mend her emotional wounds. The people of the island are so welcoming; Padar and Oonagh Quinn who run the pub, Miss MacReady the postmistress and Father Gregory.

Marianne finds another person on the island is also there to find himself and escape from life. Ryan O'Gorman, TV star, once saved Marianne's life, now he's here saving more lives when a storm hits and families need rescuing. He doesn't want to be remembered as a hero he wants to be a writer, but life in the fast lane pulls him away from the island and Marianne.

Stormy times lay ahead for more than one character, and I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series to see how obstacles are overcome, relationships smoothed and families are re-united. I really enjoyed Marianne's journey and easily fell in love with the people and the island of Innishmahon.

This review is based on a free copy of the book given to me by the author.

This book is amazing! It started slow and I didn't like it, but once Ryan O'Gorman showed up it got great fast! I couldn't put this book down, I seriously love it! Highly recommend, following this book through to the end and following the next 2 books of this story! The author did a great job!

I was immediately sucked into this novel, but are so many twists and turns, that after a while I felt like I was looking at one of those paintings where they just threw stuff at a canvas and decided to see what stuck. The ending was too contrived for me. On the fence as whether to read the rest of the series.

This is a wonderful and evocative novel set mostly in Ireland and the UK and should be very satisfying for those women (and men) who very much prefer substance over fluff. Although the author here serves up a "first" novel, she describes herself as having been a storyteller from childhood, and it shows. She's not afraid to tackle "deep" subjects, loss and grief, grave illness, and some few of the larger problems of society as a whole. Her heroine is... complicated... by turns cynical, romantic, naive, believably competent, a crusader for social causes, tough as nails, vulnerable, and very much distinguishable from a doormat.

The transition in diction from Received English to West Country Irish seems accurate, to my untutored ear at least, since I have not the Gaelic and my only words of it seem to be but one, "Sláinte", and that sometimes unsteadily, so the distinctive Irish culture adds yet another dimension to an already multifaceted novel.

I highly recommend it.

Cheers,

Lee-Anne

The blurb for the book said "Sexy, moving and funny" and a very small plot description. Sounded like a fun little romance. Well, it's a lot more than that. Actually, it's the kind of book I seldom read as I like thing just a little edgier. The story covers maybe 3 years and follows the ups and downs of Marianne's life. This is not a fast-paced adventure, but is about life as it really is sometimes. It is sexy, moving and funny and very quietly sucked me in. And, for an author's debut book, it is excellent.

On the down side: the author was very vague about the ages of her characters and I think, for the main characters at least, it would have helped a little to get a more clear picture of them. It might have helped also to have some of the thoughts and feelings of the other characters and not just the main character. There was character development, but not always very clearly defined. Marianne had some intense, enlightening watershed moments and those helped to define her character and personality a little better. Ryan, the other main character, doesn't appear until about a fourth of the way into he book. He wasn't quite as clearly defined so it was hard for me to really connect with him the way I would have liked.

All that is nit-picking to a certain degree. It was a pleasure to read an e-book that was well edited and didn't have a lot of typos and grammatical errors. I recently read a book in which the author had someone making some paper mache items and referred to them as paper "machete". Really?

I can strongly recommend this book as long as you aren't looking for fast-paced and suspense in your reading. It's a lovely, warm book and I'm looking forward to the sequel due out next year.
