Okay, hear me out, I don't play videos, save for maybe pac-man or galaga. That being said, my partner and I decided to get the switch so we could occasionally play party games. However, I saw a brief play through of Hollow Knight, and fell in love. I could not stop talking about this game, so we gave in and bought it. Only 3 hours in, and this was completely worth it! For someone that does not like video games, this is such a good game.
Let me get into detail *some spoilers ahead* so I recommend this game and continue reading if you don't mind a mini-rant.

Okay! You know those games that have you walk around dungeons and locate enemies, weapons, etc? Well take that but add a cute buddy that kicks butt and saves the day. I have not gone through much of the platformer but it kept my attention for 3 straight hours. Which has never happened. You get the opportunity to self explore without any pressures. However, you can easily die, get prepared to die A LOT. If you are okay with this, please continue reading.
My partner compares it to Dark Souls with the lore and is shocked that I am in love with Hollow Knight. Well why wouldn't I be? You get to collect currency and buy stuff for your map and explore without everyone pushing you to finish the adventure. It is quite difficult to tell what you are to do next to move along in the storyline, but that is my favorite part. It is like trying to solve a puzzle while discovering yourself along the way! Did I mention it's adorable? Because that was my biggest selling point. So there you have it, a platformer with dark lore, Caterpillar babies, and bug bosses. All while trying to rid the world of darkness. And being super cute! Please if you read this far, just do yourself a favor and buy the game.

An amazing 2D action game... if you have some patience

I love this game, far more than I would have thought, and a large part of that is the art and music. It looks pretty, unique, and altogether charming. The music and the sounds are immersive and help draw you into the experience rather than dominate the gameplay. The game mechanics are simple yet the solving of the platforming segments and figuring out enemy fight patterns is top-notch among "metroidvania" games. Truly this is one of the best. And it's definitely great to be able to take this around when you're on the go.

My only dislike about this game was that it took about 4 hours to get the next non-basic "game mechanic". Movement is one game mechanic (including jumping), attacking is another, and interacting with people/things is another. And that's all you can do. It's good at first to keep things very simple and build up how to use the basics to great effect. But when I was entering my third hour of gameplay I was absolutely dying for one additional mechanic: dashing. There are enemies that are tedious (not difficult) to fight without dashing, which really drags down the fun value as you slog through mini-bosses just waiting to finally get the dash mechanism unlocked. And once you do, the game suddenly jumps up in fun-value again. So if you either rush to get the dash mechanic or can be patient as you explore and marvel in the world Hollow Knight has created, then you should enjoy this game greatly.

Reminds me again of the great gameplay of metroid-like games where you can't reach areas without certain items or upgrades you find by exploring. Using the switch Joycon controllers I've noticed if I get in a tough battle I will accidentally press the wrong button and waste some soul power on a move I didn't want to do. A pro controller might work better for those like me with fat fingers. You will fight some baddies with fast moves that require some quick reflexes to dodge. When you die you lose all of your money you found by beating each enemy. But you keep all your weapons and items. ALSO they mark on the map where you died so you can go back and pick up your money once you beat your own black soul floating there where you died! Very fun to play so I'm trying not to just run through the whole thing all at once and spread it out over many days/weeks. I'm also avoiding any walkthroughs to figure out where to go next on my own by just exploring. It has a map so you can use that to see where you haven't been yet.

I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend and she LOVES it and only started playing it yesterday. I own the physical copy of the game and have logged 70 hours into it and I've only had it two weeks maximum, and I'm still playing it almost daily. The soundtrack is the best I've heard for a game (I especially love the Grimm Troupe music), the gameplay is amazing, its challenging but without the rage factor. The traditional animation is phenomenal, and I absolutely love the 2D factor. It gives such a unique feel to a game with so much exploring compared to a regular side scroller. Even after having so many hours into it, I'm still discovering hidden paths and items. All in all, this is an amazing game and I'd buy so many more copies to support Team Cherry if I could. I do plan to buy at least two more copies however, the PS4 edition and the Switch Collectors edition. I'll likely do the same for Hollow Knight: Silksong when that releases.

I have bought this game on multiple platforms even after being able to play it FOR FREE on the PlayStation game pass thing. I have poured 1000+ hours into this game and still absolutely love it. It was one to the games that made me finally cement my decision to go into video game development. Music is gorgeous, graphics are adorable and beautiful, story is dark and interesting, and gameplay is oh so very challenging but oh so very fun. I highly recommend it, on ANY platform.

I love this game. Its challenging, very exploration based, and has a bit of a creepy vibe to it - which I like. If you like games like Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask you will like the feel of this game. It is closer to a platformer style, but I normally don't enjoy platformers this much. Be prepared to have to explore and figure things out - you will get stuck - you will have to fight the same boss 40 times, but its so satisfying to finally beat it and you get good rewards for difficult areas too.
