This one has Kate getting sent on a case with the FBI.
Kate has been targeted by Cooper. He's said more than once he is going to kill her.
Her boss has decided to get her out of Hollywood. She's going to Tulsa, Oklahoma to work with the FBI.
On arrival Kate meets Joe Dawson. He's an FBI agent who retired. The brought him out of retirement to catch a serial killer. The Artist.
Joe is far from your typical FBI agent. In fact Joe doesn't give a s**t about rules, regulations, pc or anything else. He's going to catch a killer and he doesn't care what he has to do to do so.
Kate is put off by Joe until she gets to know him. Her opinion changes big time because Joe just doesn't give any s**t and as the case progresses Kate finds she doesn't either.
So begins one damned fine and funny read.
This one has Kate, Joe Dawson, Bernie, the Hollywood PD, the FBI, profilers, the Tulsa PD, Ryan Cooper, the Artist, paintings, old history, some seriously insane folks, gays, Kates roommates, Natalies impending wedding, Kate finally realizing she loves Jack Bautista, murder, explosions, a half sister, Kates dead Father, a heartbreaker of an ending and Kate Sexton reaching for love and life.
Just a super read. Five Stars and then some.
In many ways, Mr. Kelly's writing is becoming crisper. He has tightened the dialogue, and it keeps your interest peaked. Yes, the characters are pretty wacky, but that's okay -- it's a fiction book.
What bugs me? Numerous typographical errors. Have an editor proof-read it. It's just sloppy. For better or worse, first impressions are important. And typos leave a bad impression.
Second, I felt there was too much gratuitous sex. Hey, I'm a pig. I enjoy reading about others' sexual exploits. But this sex is unrelated to the plot. It's the definition of gratuitous sex. If you're trying to establish a relationship between characters, there are far more powerful ways to do so than to have them engage in sex.
Third, I agree with another reviewer that there were too many plot lines. All the stuff about Kate's dad should be another book. It has the potential to be a great story, but it distracts from the plot in this this book. It didn't add to the main plot. If it doesn't add, remove it.
I was just reading a "how to write" book by Dan Gutman, an outstanding children's author. He suggests trimming the fat. If you don't need something, eliminate it. This book could be greatly improved with more critical editing.
OK, so why 4-stars with all my criticism? Because I enjoyed it! It passes my bottom-line test.
The pursuit of the serial killer is intense. The clues will keep you guessing without success. The surprising conclusion will shock you. While pursuing the leads of this killer, Kate is pursued by the man who killed her father years ago. This is an intense story. Even with all the 'action', I found myself losing interest in certain spots in the book. I had to put it down and pick it up again later.
I like Kate's character. She has an awful lot to deal with as a cop. Compound that with her personal life and it is amazing that she hasn't suffered a breakdown before this.
The most enjoyable character to date is the introduction of Joe. An acerbic, tell it like it is, insulting, obnoxious FBI agent, who amazingly gets results. His name calling (nicknaming everyone he meets) is absolutely hilarious. His insults will make you wonder how he manages to stay on the Force. I hope we see more of him.
A great mystery that just seemed to be lacking. Not for everyone.
Top reviews from other countries

Interesting storyline, plenty of twists and turns in the plot, and a likeable main character. Will be gradually working my way through the whole series.

Make something fresh and interesting. I thoroughly recommend this book.

Outcome was, in some cases, predictable but this did notebook the enjoyment of this pageturner.
An easy read.
