Hollywood racks started in 1973 when we began making trunk-mounted racks in the back of our bike shop in Hollywood, California. Our Aim was simple: we wanted to make good quality products that were easy to use and came fully assembled. We earned a great reputation fast and soon began selling our racks to other bike shops throughout California. By the late '70s, we began selling our racks to bicycle companies such as Schwinn, Peugeot and nishiki. In 1981, we closed the bike shop and opened a small factory in los angeles, CA to exclusively make car racks, then relocated to a larger facility in 1988. In 1989, we began exporting our products to Europe, and in the 1990's we expanded our line to include racks for trailer hitches, pickup trucks and spare tires. We have since relocated our offices, R and d and us warehouse to our present facility in the los angeles area with manufacturing in Taiwan. Our products are available in all 50 States and in over 25 countries worldwide.
This heavy-duty platform-style rack is designed as a 2 + 2 system so it can be easily converted to hold either two bicycles or four bicycles. It mounts on a 2-inch hitch and folds flat against the back of a vehicle when not in use. The rack uses padded universal top clamps and adjustable wheel holders. Bikes need simply to be dropped into the wheel holders and clamps slid down onto the frames. Velcro wheel straps add security. To prevent rack sway, the hitch system is "no-wobble/no-tools" and includes a locking pin and 9-foot security cable. The rack carries a limited warranty against defects.

It took me a bit of time to initially assemble the rack. The instructions could be better and the parts coded or numbered to fit specific locations. However, once assembled it takes only about 5 minutes to load or unload 2 bikes. 4 bikes take a bit more time. It is important when initially setting up the rack, to place the bikes you are most likely to use on the rack so that you can adjust the location and positioning of the wheels. This saves a lot of time when you next use the rack.
I had a Draw-Tite Class III, 2 inch receiver hitch installed on my Outback and it works beautifully with this bike rack. It doesn't extend beyond the bumper and presented no problems when I was installing the bike rack connecting unit. My installer advised placing grease or WD-40 on the hitch to avoid damage to the protective black paint of the hitch. This also made installation of the rack easier. If you do this, be sure to wipe the grease or WD-40 residue from the hitch and rack components so as not to cause staining where you store the rack or park the car.
The quality of construction of the bike rack is very good and quite solid. This adds to its weight, but is worth it because of the exceptional stability it provides. The price is reasonable given the quality and c construction of this unit. It's fold up feature, when not in use along with it's fold down feature when accessing the trunk or rear doors of a vehicle are very handy. Removal of the clip holding the pin in place allowing the movement of the rack up and down looks harder than it is.
I highly recommend this bike rack for people who move their bikes around regularly and want to do so fairly easily without damaging the bikes or the motor vehicle involved.
I had to get out my tap kit and tap out the holes with a 1/4" 6/28 tap for the screws to fit. Got a bonus shard of metal in my eye (working upside down and too lazy to go find my goggles).
Not too many people have a tap kit handy. This would have been really frustrating without it. And returning it would be a nightmare... the foam packing is the old kind that disintegrates all over the place, leaving white balls sticking to anything with a static charge.
Aside from that, a nice (100 pound) rack. Now that it's on my pathfinder, 5 stars.
PS. I jut finished an 1100 mile trip with 4 bikes on the rack and it worked beautifully the entire week!!! I even backed into a car with my rack folded up empty and it damaged the front of his car a good bit and didn't even scratch the finish on the rack. Nothing was bent or broken at all. That's one tough rack!!!
