A book like this should have been made 30 to 40 years ago. Personally, I became a fan of the Dead End Kids after I watched the first movie
Dead End
(1937) in the 1980's. They began playing many of the movies on late-night television then.
After doing some research at the library and later reading an older version of
Leonard Maltin's 2015 Movie Guide (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide)
, I was delighted to discover the young actors had made many sequels as The Dead End Kids (1937-43). Billy Halop and Huntz Hall moved on to The Little Tough Guys films with some of the gang and Leo Gorcey and Bobby Jordan with others became The East Side Kids (1940-45). Huntz Hall and Gabriel Dell joined later. Then the gang changed title again and were known as The Bowery Boys (1946-58).
For a total of 86 movies and 3 serials from 1937 to 1958 we have enjoyed these rambunctious teenagers and some all the way into their 30's. Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall were the age of 38 when they made their last film with the gang.
I know that author, Richard Roat worked hard on this book doing interviews with family members, endless research and gathering photos for many years. The book has 236 pages.
There is a forward with Mendi Koenig and Brandy Gorcey-Ziesemer.
Short Cast Biographies of Bernard Punsley, Billy Halop, Bobby Jordan, Gabriel Dell, Huntz Hall, Leo Gorcey, Bernard Gorcey, Dick Chandlee, Mendie Koenig, Halley Chester, Stanley Clements, Buddy Gorman, David Gorcey, Charles Duncan, Harris Berger, David Durand, Donald Haines, Eugene Francis, Frankie Burke, Billy benedict, Benjamin Bartlett, Frankie Thomas, James McCallion, John Duncan, Sammy Morrison, Bobby Stone, Norman Abbott, Eddie LeRoy, William Lawrence, Sam Edwards, Jack Edwards, Mickey Martin and Wesley Giraud.
Short Supporting Player Biographies of Charles Peck, Ronald Sinclair, Ward Wood, Kenneth Howell, George Offerman Jr, Jackie Searl, Gil Stratton Jr and William Tracy.
There is a section of "Lost Players".
A description of all the black & white Dead End Kids, East Side Kids and Bowery Boys movies are given and this includes The Little Tough Guys films with Billy Halop and the serials, Junior G-Men, Sea Raiders, Junior G-Men of the Air.
You might even find a note about an interesting fact about an actor or the movie.
274 black & white photographs are contained in this book.
The author had so much information, he made a second book
Hollywood's Made-to-Order Punks Part 2: A Pictorial History of the Dead End Kids, Little Tough Guys, East Side Kids and the Bowery Boys
(2014), and a third book, Hollywood's Made to order Punks Part 3: The Faces of the Angels with Dirty Faces. (2015).
Note: The third Dead End Kids movie, Angles with Dirty Faces (1938), was computer-colorized in 1989. This version was broadcast on Ted Turner's cable channels (TBS, TNT).

Of all the books I got this was fine. A complete history of The Dead End Kids,The Little Tough Guys,The East Side Kids and The Bowery Boys. A history that spanned from 1937 to 1958.It gives you a history of every actor that played in their movies through Warner Bros. to Universal Pictures over to the cheapo Monogram Pictures right up to Allied artists.Complete bio's of the main actors also gives a little bio about the movies and loads of pictures with the boys with Bogart in the 1930's. Hanging out with World war 2 Gi's while fiming The Adventures of the Flying Cadets a Universal Serial back in 1943. Yes it also talks about their serials in the 1940's Junior G-Men,Sea raiders and Junior G Men Of the Air.Did you know Norman Abbott,Bud Abbott's nephew was a Little Tough Guy at Universal in 1943?
Iy talks about the demons in the head of Leo Grocey as he could not handle the death of his father and dropped out of the series in 1956.It's a great book you have to get it.

What makes this book so special is that the Author actually sought out surviving members of "The Dead End Kids,Little Tough Guys, East Side Kids and The Bowery Boys". Just about all of them were approachable except those who couldn't be found and there was one who didn't want to be bothered about his past. I bought the kindle edition and the picture on the cover is out of focus and there are quite a few typos and half finished sentences. Having said that I am glad I purchased this book! It is a treasure chest of info, biographies of actors who appeared in the different franchises, back stories of what was happening during the time the Movies were made. Mr. Roat wrote letters and phoned many of the actors cold [with out a introduction by some one they knew] and all were very cordial and real friendships developed and He was able to reacquaint actors who hadn't seen each other in decades. I understand He has written a a 2nd volume to this book which is probably as good as this one.

For the longest time, Bowery Boys fans (and fans of their other incarnations) have had little in the way of home media to enjoy. The first major breakthrough happened in the late 80's with the release of "The Films of The Bowery Boys", a book authored by David Hayes and Brent Walker.
The Films of the Bowery Boys
This book is an excellent filmography. Biographies are a secondary feature.
Ten years later another book was published entitled: "From Broadway To The Bowery" by Len Getz.
From Broadway to the Bowery: A History and Filmography of the Dead End Kids, Little Tough Guys, East Side Kids and Bowery Boys Films, with Cast Biographies
It too is primarily a filmography. Biographies are more comprehensive than the aforementioned book but still remain a secondary feature.
Both books are excellent and rate 5 stars.
This book however highlights the lives of the actors (from major players to those making only one appearance)as told by someone who knew many of the actors personally. That someone is Richard Roat. He shares many of the experiences and conversations with his friends...former Bowery Boys. The bios are chock full of interesting anecdotes and surprises. Filmography takes a serious backseat to the great biographies that Richard presents to the reader. Each film is denoted by the review given by Variety.
If you are a fan, you must have this book. Even if you have either of the filmographies mentioned above (or like me...have both), you should get this book as a must-have companion.
Thank you Richard for sharing these personal stories and photos.
Now if we can only get Warner Brothers to release these films on DVD...

Not very well formatted

The Kindle version has lots of blank lines, strange text formatting, duplicated lines/sentences. The cast credits are mostly vague and incomplete, the film reviews are short and not very informative.
