5/2015 - Update
It finally broke after almost 3 years. I see the heating wire at the end of the connection burned off and broke. (see the picture. there is a burn mark.) This model works very well. So, I order another one. I look inside the newer model. There is some different from what I can see. The end of the heating wire connection seems bigger now. The electric wires (red, black, and yellow) are wrapped with heat shields. These wires are bare without the heat shields in the old model. The newer model has the heating wire wrapped around the fan 4 times. The older model has the heating wire wrapped around the fan 6 times. The new heater feels warmer and most importantly, it does not smell bad like those oil filled or ceramic models.
Still 5 stars if this last as long as the older one
the heater itself has three functions - heat always on, heat temperature controlled, and fan only. oddly, only one fan speed.
background: another heater i used for years was a small, black ceramic heater also manufactured by Holmes. it was an inexpensive one which had two control dials - a high / low / fan / off rotary and a relative thermostat control. it worked for 6-8 years until the plastic which held the rotary switch gave out. ( Holmes Compact Ceramic Heater with Thermostat, HCH4051-UM )
i found the setup to be extremely easy, especially with the addition of the jog-dial on the front ! so refreshing to see that kind of functionality in a low-end consumer device.
when the heater is running, it's relatively quiet and works well.
* cool down
i like that the fan runs for 10 seconds after the heater coil is shutoff to cool down the unit. the unit also shows the countdown in its display.
* the timer
i think the biggest issue for me was the functionality of the timer - here's how that works.
when you set timer, the heater will turn on ONLY in mode Heat Always On and will ONLY run for 30 minutes. you can't choose Thermostat or Fan Only. (also remember the unit only has one fan speed.)
i think this is too bad that you can't choose something other than Heat Always On ; besides not being the MAIN mode for which i purchased this heater, i don't think Always On is even the most effective. as an example, what if i like a 60 deg bathroom and one day the bathroom is 30 deg, then the next it's 50 deg. this unit WON'T automatically heat the space as you would like. because, with the timer, all it can do is run full-speed with the heat on for 30 minutes. it has no idea what's going on. lame.
i chose this heater because it was Thermostat controlled and even my little black one was ALWAYS thermostat controlled.
next, when you set the timer and the heater run its cycle, afterwards the timer functionality is *turned off*. this means that every day you must re-activate it for the next day. to do this you have to once again manually press the timer button (hold for 3 seconds) and go through both the hours and minutes spots each time. (so 1 long and 2 short button presses). the saving grace is that the time is saved for you so it really is 1 long and 2 short. otherwise you'd have to use the wheel again.
it really didn't seem like the thermometer worked well. i could turn up the thermometer from 65-70, then it would run for 10 seconds and shut off. i'd move it from 70-75 and it would do the same. granted, this was while it was in the small space i had, but 10 seconds isn't long enough to heat any amount of air volume and certainly shouldn't trip a thermostat for 5 more degrees (then 5 more, etc)
* shuts off in tight spaces
the manual states to give the heater 3 feet on each side ! when i ran it in the small space i have (maybe 1 foot clearance left/right, against wall, pointing for 4 feet out) the unit would constantly overheat and quickly at that. the red ring around the jog dial would start to blink then soon the unit would just stop.
once the unit has overheated, you need to unplug the device to reset it. this process kills all of the settings for time, etc.
so i think this heater is very temperamental where it's placed.
there is also nothing in the manual about a blinking red wheel.
(my old ceramic heater would run wherever i put it, even if it was in an enclosed box !)
* only one fan speed
this isn't a huge issue, but i was just thinking that the old heater had two fan speeds, and i used them both.
so i'm sending back the unit to get:
* a basic heater (like my old one. fan speeds, basic thermo control)
* a simple timer for an outlet (like GE 24-Hour Plug-In Mechanical Timer with 1 Grounded Outlet )
not only is that setup * less expensive, it also has * more functionality because i can have a standard timer turn on/off at any time during the day for as long as i want. additionally, the cheap heater will only run when its thermostat tells it to, so it will cycle on/off accordingly. the only drawback to this is that the temperature won't be digitally controlled. oh well
My biggest issue is that when you turn it off, it doesn't turn off immediately, it does a ten second countdown. It shows the countdown on the display, but I want it to turn off when I turn it off. (It's an electric heater and I want to feel TOTALLY confident that it's off when I walk away and I do not want to wait around to be sure). I added a switch at the plug so now I just turn off the power from there, which works fine.
The new issue we discovered is that it has a maximum heat temperature in the "stay on" mode (different than many other similar bathroom space heaters we've had which are more literal). So you can turn it on, put it into "stay on" mode and nothing happens if it deems it too hot, so not really "stay on", but instead "stay on until I, your heater, thinks it's warm enough". I'm sure it's a "feature" for safety and works well for lots of situations, but in our bathroom, it gets hot but we still want the heater on, so not good for us.
The troubleshooting section does not include info about what to do in this case. It refers me to the warranty for service instructions. But there was no warranty included in the box!
Of course I bought this two months ago, before it got cold enough to use it, and so I'm just trying to set it up today -- a month past the return date.
The lack of warranty in the box makes me suspect this unit was returned, probably because of the non-functioning MODE button, by a previous customer who forgot to return the warranty card with it, and then they just shipped it out to the next sucker, me.
Looks like I'm stuck with what amounts to a very large digital clock, no heat function whatever. RATS!
Returns on defective NEW, NEVER USED products should be allowed past the 30 day window.

1. Temperature is in Fahrenheit only. This isn't a big deal but it would be nice to pick Celcius if I wanted.
2. The minimum temperature for the autoshut off feature is 65F which is 18.33C. It would be nicer if it went to 60F I think.
For value buyers, I found this to be a better value than the Dyson options. This heater seemed just about as good but more economical.
Still I have given 4 star because the seller is very genuine he helped me in each step of returning process since I had followed the all rule he had mentioned in his profile.
It works excellently and puts out a lot of heat. I'm very pleased with this product.
