This model, like most, has the ionizer (this collects particles in the air by bonding them together) and passes them through a triple carbon filter. The first filter is fairly porous black foam that is washable. This version is nice, as it is held in place unlike the loose fitting foam in Holmes HAP716-U True-HEPA 3-Speed Tower Allergen Remover. This collects the big stuff and I do recommend washing it when you see lots of white particles. It only takes a simple wash and a squeeze in the sink. The actual HEPA-type filter is the item that catches 99% of airborne pollutants. These are expensive and only last up to six months, the only real drawback. They can cost anywhere up to a third of the actual machine. I have been able to prolong the life if these by applying the suction end of my vacuum cleaner to the filter and gently rubbing it, thus pulling out particles and dust. You can only get away with this for about a year, but it does help. The filter check indicator light will let you know when it's time for a filter replacement.
Personal experience with this filter is that despite the three speeds, I only use the lesser one at night.Read more ›
I looked and researched a lot, I ordered the Ionic Pro and later found that the product was full of problems and was indeed very harmful/dangerous for various reasons. So I returned it and kept of looking.
I happened to stumble across this item, I was immediately attracted to its looks, I was also familiar with the brand as this is the same brand of the purifier I was looking to replace. The only reason I was replacing the older one was due to its size and high cost of changing the filters ( $63 every 4 months).
I was intrigued by this model, the filter replacement cost is around $23- $26 and they have several types of filters to choose from depending on your needs, very cool.
The item is somewhat quiet when compared to my previous purifier, this one sorta produce a very low buzzing sound on low and medium, but if placed on high the fan goes full blast and very loud. But it can go almost undetected only at a distance of 9 feet or more. The ionic was completely silent, that was neat.
One very important characteristic I was looking for was that the purifier did not have any for of ionic filtering or that it could be disabled. This one offers it but its only activated if you want to do so, so that was good. The reason I don't like this feature is because of mix reviews that its not good for your health and the Ionic pro emitted a horrible smell due to the ozone. I am not sure this one produces ozone, but I am just staying out of its way.Read more ›
Two mild downsides: it is a bit noisy on high and the filters are a bit expensive, but both issues are minor compared to the positives. I keep it on low and replace the filters as it prompts me, I am guessing that I have replaced them three times in around 24 months. Just put in the third set of two last week so I am ordering more and thought I would leave a review. HEPA-Type A's aren't that expensive but it is worth it to buy them 4 or 6 at a time since it uses two of them.
On edit: After 2 1/2 years of effective, albeit slightly noisy, service, my Holmes Air Purifier coughed, gurgled and died the other day. I emailed Holmes and in less than 10 days I have a new Holmes Air Purifier running in my condo. It is quieter than the one I bought in 2010, and it is rated for more square footage, and the CADR ratings for tobacco/dust/pollen respectively have gone from 126 to 135, 114 to 142 and from 133 to 176 for pollen which is my biggest issue! So they replaced my faulty air purifier, no questions asked except for an ID number on the old one, and in less than 2 weeks I have a new, better air purifier. Great customer service! I liked my old one a lot, but I love my new, quieter one. And you can retrofit the filters to be either the cheaper HEPA type or pay a little more and get True HEPA filters.
