Style Name: Air Purifier
As soon as I got it, I started it running full-speed in my 120sq.ft bedroom all evening and night. Within an hour or two of running, I could already tell a noticeable difference in the air quality. I have the ionizer running as well. The air is fresher, and I can breathe easier. It is the first time in years, I woke up without my nose and throat congested from my dust/mold allergies.

While the box states it is only for rooms up to 81sq.ft. I found it has worked really well in my slightly larger room. The high fan-speed is powerful, but noticeable in sound. However, it is only just as noisy as any "wind" type fan. However, on the medium and low fan-speeds it is practically inaudible. It is currently on the medium fan-speed and my desktop computer is louder than it at this moment.

This takes the Holmes "D" type filters, and I can get a 2-pack at my local WalMart for $30. The instruction manual says that based on air quality and typical usage, you should change the filter every 10 - 12 months. Therefore, a $30 2-pack could last you two years. Also, of course, the Air Purifier does come with a filter preinstalled. Typical usage according to the instruction manual is operating it continuously.

I do not smoke, nor do I have any pets. So, I cannot attest to its usefulness in that regard. However, my room has a mold problem and I also have a dust allergy.

I am quite please with the Holmes HAP706-U Air Purifier.

It's fairly loud on High fan, but almost silent on the lower settings.

As for the smell a few people have mentioned... This new unit puts a slight "new" smell into the room, like the smell of a newly-built home or new mobile home. Not bad at all but noticeable, and you may even like that smell. I have not noticed any lung irritation from it. I presume it will go away as the unit is broken in. I have COPD and so do not use the ozone ionizer, so it is not ozone smell. Apart from the smell though, it has an unmistakable cleanness to the output.

I cannot rate the effectiveness on helping on breathing issues yet, it may take a while to get the benefit of removing any irritation and resulting lung inflammation. It is definitely changing the room air though, I'd say these units are a good buy.

Four months later: The fan has become a little noisy. Not loud, just irritating, the sound of cheap plastic rattling. I am disappointed, I did look forward to it working like new for a decent amount of time. I'd like to keep it on medium speed as it has been since purchase, now I have to keep it on low.

Purchased this unit for a smaller study the unit is very quiet does an excellent job of filtering the indoor air. Build quality is very good.
Good looking unit, with filters easily located at WalMart or Amazon. I would give it more stars but five is the max. This HAP706 is a perfect fit for the smaller room where noise is a concern. We are a non smoking non pet household so cannot give information on smoke removal but it does clean the air for the allergies we sometimes suffer from. Nothing like a pure clean air room!!!

My husband was VERY skeptical about this purchase, but after using this air purifier for three months now, he's sold and I am confident in its abilities to do what it claims to do.

The both of us were having problems with feeling 'stuffy' when we woke up in the morning. Our room isn't very big so its easy to keep clean and prevent dust from accumulating. Leaving a window open to assist with air circulation didn't help and isn't practical when its really hot or really cold outside.

This baby solved our problem. Although it was a bit bigger than I though it'd be, we had no problem finding a place for it that satisfied both the required operating clearance and aesthetics of our room.

We kept it on high for the first week or so and the both of us noticed a dramatic difference in our breathing. We also tried out the optional ionizer. It does an ok job of reducing odors, but don't expect a miracle. All in all we luv it and it has certainly improved our sleeping experience.

PROS:
- Works very well dispite its size
- True HEPA filter is a big plus
- Quiet on lower settings
- Washable pre-filter -- Helps extend the life of the HEPA filter -- Haven't tried to wash it yet though
- Ionizer
- Ease of setup and simple controls

CONS:
- Highest setting is quite loud
- The true HEPA filter replacements (HAPF300D-U2(D) according to Holmes' website) cost more than half the price of the item itself. -- Granted its a two pack and the manual states that on average, the HEPA filters need replacement every 10-12 months.
- Dust magnet -- It IS designed to pull and filter dust, but dust will also collect all over whatever you place near it. After a quick online search into the matter, this is a normal though unpleasant feature of quite a few air purifiers... I usually just take a dry swiffer sheet and wipe up the dust once a week.

I feel like in buying this little unit for around fifty dollars and considering all the money I've spent on replacement filters over the past couple of years, in hindsight I am regretting not just buying a better unit in the first place. Cost had been a huge factor in my initial decision to choose this model but I realize now that I would have been much better off putting off this purchase and saving up for a different model.

I've owned this unit for about four years and I will state that it has performed reliably as per what the manufacturer says it can do, yet I would still NOT purchase this unit again. The list of "cons" has only grown with time:

* The *maximum* 80 sq ft is a relatively VERY small area; most homes and living spaces need bigger coverage overall.

* Constantly running ANY appliance at it max is never a good idea. With a maximum 80sq ft coverage area there is virtually no way to have this unit run at less than max capacity. Ideally, I would rather have a unit be working at 50-70% of its capacity.

* The filters are expensive and over time, this expense vs investing in better technology will quickly outpace its cost effectiveness. If I had purchased a better/bigger unit at an initial higher cost of let's say $150, between the total cost of the filters in addition to initial investment on the Holmes unit, the Holmes has now exceeded the cost of a higher priced unit within eighteen months, making the more expensive unit the actual "cheaper" option.

* There is better, more advanced technology to remove more allergens from your environment.

* Does not handle cigarette smoke well.

* Quite noisy on high; other speeds are quiet to acceptable.
