Purchase options and add-ons

The Holocaust: Europe, the World, and the Jews is a readable text for undergraduate students containing sufficient but manageable detail. The author provides a broad set of perspectives, while emphasizing the Holocaust as a catastrophe emerging from an international Jewish question. This text conveys a sense of the Holocaust's many moving parts. It is arranged chronologically and geographically to reflect how persecution, experience, and choices varied over different periods and places. Instructors may also take a thematic approach, as the chapters have distinct sections on such topics as German decisions, Jewish responses, bystander reactions, and other themes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The clever synthesis of secondary material and the quotes from survivors and others give the students a personal feel for catastrophe. “

-Severin Hochberg, George Washington University

“The international, indeed global approach, is very sound, and sets this book apart from others. I would strongly consider using it…The breadth is distinctive and impressive.”

-David Tompkins, Carleton College

“This book could adequately serve two purposes: as a fine introductory-level work to assign to students, and as a resource for faculty.”

-William Drumright, Monroe Community College

“Well organized. What a relief. Thank you. I would order this text in a minute.”

-Jan-Ruth Mills, Pima Community College

“I would highly recommend the book for those who teach a Holocaust course that comes out of Judaic/Jewish studies program. This would be a good solid text that would serve undergraduates quite well.”

-Randall Kaufman, Miami Dade College – Homestead Campus

Really good book for developing units on the Holocaust. The beginning of the book is extremely useful as it tells the story pre-Holocaust persecutions and atrocities. The sections describing Hitler’s rise to power and the concepts and vocabulary that flows from that story are nice summarized in ways that make it easy for students to understand. I would definitely recommend purchasing this book and using it in class.

I purchased this book for a history class I was taking and it was extremely impactful. This is a topic that was tough to get through, but a need-to-know. I recommend reading it even if it is not for a class.
