So even though I only gave it three stars, I still think it's worth the read. This author knows how to capture your attention with her characters. Just don't get too hyped, this wouldn't make it to the top 10 of her work in my opinion. No disrespect intended, just an honest review for readers like myself.
Holt desperately tried to move on with his life unknowingly being under the influence of his father, Jack Calson. He tried to model his life after him and his grandfather Hank, but realized after going through more drama that he was his own person and was a better person because Sylvie was back in he and his son Wes' life. Both he and Sylvie's realization that karma was at play to put them back together after 10 years, made them come back together for their boys and their love. They were destined to be with each other and to resist was futile.
I love the way that Theodora wrote this story. It was full of drama and mystery. She kept teasing the read with just enough tidbits to make the reader wonder what was going on and what the hell else is going to happen to this couple. That mugger incident had my heart in my throat. The storyline was well plotted, written and executed. It kept my attention from beginning to end.
HOWEVER, what Theodora Taylor managed to do in this story was provide more than just a typical knight in shining armor story. The characters were nuanced and real. People are imperfect. They are molded and influenced by their circumstances. This story showed that in all of its "splendor". There were unexpected twists and things that made you feel for everyone involved.
Holt was flawed, as we all are. We were given the opportunity to see so many sides to his character in this book. Sylvie wasn't perfect either. It was a story of co-dependence and independence. There were so many layers to this book that I will admit that I was thoroughly entertained!
Theodora Taylor is one of a handful of writers that, in my opinion, consistently provides excellent reading material.
This book though... LOVE
Please read this book. You will not regret it!
I'm fairly certain that every time I review one of Ms. Taylor's books, I say that I love the heroine and Sylvie is no exception. Holt turns her life completely upside down, and her parents - well, I have no words for them. But she's a survivor. I liked Holt, really felt for him and all his problems, but it took me a long minute to love him. He was weak and manipulative, but he redeemed himself.
Loved the boys. Ender was a trip, and poor little Wes, he needed Sylvie as much as Holt did. Loved the scene where they showed up to the arbitration meeting, trying to fight for their rights. They are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
Another good read from Theodora Taylor. Looking forward to Prin's story!
