Personally, I generally handle the NKJV most of the time, but I was interested in giving a few more "modern" translations a try for casual reading in daily personal study as well as to keep abreast of what some Bible students are using and being exposed to.
First, I would not conduct serious study using this translation alone. That being said, there are very, very few English language Bibles that I would feel comfortable creating a complete Bible study (for either group presentation or self-edification) with. There is too much depth and richness found in the original languages that an English translation just simply misses. But, for adding some clarity not found in another English translation, casual reading and/or multiple demographic group readings, I find this translation to be an interesting option.
Second, I found the table of contents and search a bit cumbersome. An e-publishing company called OSNOVA has created a very appealing option for direct jump navigation on Kindle edition Bibles. I really wish that they had been involved in the development of this release, but they do not currently offer this translation. If navigation and ease of use is more important to you than the HCSB English translation, simply do a Kindle search here on Amazon for OSNOVA. But, this HCSB edition in review here does an "alright" job of providing navigation. I would say that the table of contents and book subpages to be more like an impediment than an aid to navigation overall, but not so bad as to keep me from using this edition.
Finally, I find the text to be well formatted and generally easy to read and understand. Some concerns about contrast issues on Kindle devices (mainly regarding "words of Christ in red") have been alleviated here and I can see no issue at all reading a passage such as John 14:6 and those following in the same context. One minor complaint here... I do find the cross-reference footnote markers to be a bit cumbersome and may distract from reading some passages, especially those passages which are read aloud in a group setting without prior exercise. I think that with use, experience and exposure of this translation in this format will aid in getting comfortable around those passage interruptions. I personally would have preferred superscript characters instead of full size characters.
In short, if you are familiar with and enjoy using the HCSB translation, this would be a decent companion to your hard-copy HCSB volume. If you are looking to purchase an easy to carry electronic modern translation for comparative study, this may also prove useful. Personally, I find the free Kindle ESV Bible option (also found here on Amazon) to be easier for me to read without interruption, the navigation is better tailored for the reader and it provides many of the same "features" that this edition offers. If you have not tried either the HCSB or the ESV Kindle editions, I would highly suggest you try the ESV first, then consider a sample of this HCSB edition before a full fledged purchase.
This is my primary Bible. It is easy to read and very accurate. Sometimes I switch to other versions on my Kindle to see how it translates. I will be giving printed copies of HCSB to family and friends because I love it so much. I can't wait until the HCSB Study Bible becomes available for Kindle. This is not the type of Bible to take to church as it does not have a feature to jump from one specific Scripture to another but it is great for reading and studying. Do not be afraid to give this Bible a try.
