73. Holy Manics! (2014 20th anniversary box set)

73. Holy Manics! (2014 20th anniversary box set)
Tori Amos' magnificent "Under the pink", Sinead O'Connor's fragile "Universal mother", the Cranberries' nostalgic "No need to argue", and Suede's elegiac "Dog man star" are among the greatest releases from 1994. I was quite young at that time to know of the band, and so I only got to learn about this album later on, and after I'd purchased the "Everything must go" record. It didn't help that the material featured on the album is heavy and unwelcoming. For those who are not aware, this is one of the darkest albums ever recorded, one that has to be listened to really closely in order to witness and appreciate its penetrating, astounding brilliance. Certainly not the most accessible stuff, but definitely one of the most unforgettable listening experiences. Those interested in this release, will have the chance to enjoy the band's 1994 Astoria show recorded by the BBC, and a collection of acoustic performances recorded at the band's 2014 Radio 4 Mastertapes session. Also, the original album is presented on heavyweight vinyl, for the first time since a limited run in 1994. And all of these are remastered by James Dean Bradfield himself and Tim Young. I wish the packaging was just as great as the material featured on this 12" x 12" box. Although the outer box is nice, the inside case where the LP and the 4 CDs are placed is rather flimsy. What will sell this is the rare - and brilliant - US mix of the album, and the superb book which is a small treasure; it's amazing the plethora of memorabilia featured! Obviously this edition is for fans and collectors, thus, depending on how fond one is of this particular era of the Manics, this is worth having. List of contents: - VINYL: LP pressing on 180 gram vinyl - CD 1: The Holy Bible - CD 2: The Holy Bible (US mix) - CD 3: B-Sides - CD 4: Live - PAPERBACK BOOK (40pp): including rare photos and artwork, handwritten lyrics and notes from Richey Edwards and by the band

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ever Richey is HERE
Reviewed in Japan on December 22, 2014

    ●CD3.B面集

    更に、96年のシングル「A Design For Life」に収録の『Faster』(Vocal Mix)や、

This album helped me through my most difficult teenage crises. For that reason it will always hold a special place in my heart. This boxset was a christmas present, and it brought back so many memories. The album is a real gem, and the best Manics album in their collection.

This anniversary issue should have included all of the songs and the DVD that was in the deluxe edition of a few years back to make it really complete.
