Editorial Reviews

Joe Barresi’s new mix of Holy Diver released as a 2-LP set on 180-gram vinyl. It includes the original nine tracks, plus the 1983 B-side version of “Evil Eyes” as a bonus track. Side four is decorated with an etching of the legendary demon Murry that graces the album’s iconic cover. The vinyl is kept in a gatefold sleeve that shows off newly commissioned artwork by longtime Dio artist, Marc Sasso.

One of the other reviewers claimed that this version of the LP says something to the effect of "words and music" by Dio. Note that this is not accurate. The cover actually says "all music and MELODIES by Ronnie James Dio." Big difference. It does not credit Dio with exclusively writing the music, as the other reviewer inaccurately indicated. Band members are given credits for individual tracks. See my attached photographic evidence.Anyway, I am enjoying this remix. I can hear the guitar and bass guitar better than I could with the original. The non fade out versions of tracks comes as a pleasant surprise, as it is great to hear that actual endings were created for every song. I do find this version of "Evil Eyes" to be inferior to the version that made it onto The Last in Line.

Well I really wanted to like this remix and well it turns out I did. Of course I had to compare this vinyl remix with the original vinyl version I bought when it came out. To me the overall output level is pretty darn close. The remix is nice and punchy and the kick drum splits through nicely on the transients like one would hope for when listening to a vinyl record. Compared to the original recording it seems that the vocals are just a little lower and the guitar is a little louder. I am not impressed by many of the remixes of classic albums done these days but this is very well done..Thanks Joe..Great Job!! Nevertheless if I had to choose between the original version and the remix I would go with the original it is embedded in my DNA.. Somebody hearing it for the 1st time might think otherwise but both are great. Quality of the packaging was also good Records came in archival type sleeves... No warping here. If you are a DIO fan and you like vinyl I think this is totally worth it Or if you cannot find or afford a mint version of the the original this is the way to go.

What can I say? This re-master "ROCK'S" your face off period!!! Having the honor of meeting Ronnie at the NAMM show in downtown Los Angeles in February 2002 I thought was enough. But no, he signed a Dean Markley DIO photo with the words Rock on Kick Ass. This album would make him proud. So, take a trip to 1983 on a beautiful impeccable sounding sonic voyage! R.I.P. Ronnie, & thanks Amazon......

The band may not have much good to say about this remix, but as a fan I can report that this mix is exactly as powerful and kick ass as you REMEMBER Holy Diver sounding.

Let me elaborate, the drums kick harder, the rhythm section has a thump and boom that hits clear and firm, guitars ring clear and drive the heavy drone of the title song, Dio’s vocals have an ease and power that lifts all that metal up to greatest of heights.

Stream even the original to the remix and you will hear it. The dynamics are actually improved over the original something that current studio styles favor, but this remix removes from the original where lots of the band sound blended together and maxed out the levels more.

Or maybe now I’m remembering my first few listens of the LP against my own memory of this killer record as compared with the original.

All I know is it sounds great, glad to have it, live the new artwork!

This is the same tracks mixed in a different perspective. With added start counts and no fade outs…the original worked out endings in tact. Don’t get me wrong the original is classic, but Dio had a different view at the time. More of a story telling. This is more Dio “The bands original lineup sound” Brings Vivian’s guitar to the front more with more shades of playing. More drums and bass in the mix. I will always love the original but I will also love this for a fresh take and instrument feel.

DIO is so great! The new artwork is really cool. Such a great album to have in my collection.

I have an old 80s original pressing of the album, and I A/B compared them. The older one is louder and boomier, but of course , it lacks fine detail in the individual instruments. The new mix is somewhat quieter, but you can hear MORE if you crank it up, like fine detail of the guitar, and the drum work . The tom rolls are EPIC on the new mix. Since our old record has some bumps and scratchy bits, I'll be retiring it in favor of the new one. The song Holy Diver has an alternate ending to the classic, just enough to make an old song new again. This is also mixed 'wide' where in the 80s vinyl mastering, it was more full in your face. I love them both.

5.0 out of 5 stars You shouldn't mess with a classic, but....

I was leery about getting this album. Remixes don't always sit well with me. This is an exception.
Ronnie's voice us a little more prominent and the bottom end was turned down very slightly. The best part of this record is that there are no fade-outs. Alot of songs end with an improvised outro. This is most noticeable on the title track. Alot of songs also start with a count in, which is cool.
The album is double vinyl with a gatefold sleeve. Side four has an etching of Murray.
After listening to the same album for close to forty years, it is refreshing hearing it a little different but still maintaining its integrity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un vero pezzo da collezione per tutti i fan (artwork a parte)
Reviewed in Italy on April 8, 2024
Acquistata versione vinile.
