Before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, nothing in this book is being presented as incontrovertible truth. It is only a different way of looking at Biblical texts, divorced of all connections to belief and preconceived notions. Quite liberating, actually. Like his book on Moses and the Pentateuch, Robert Price this time surveys the entire Old Testament including the Apocrypha, and provides a case for reading it in a different light. This includes dating the different books much later than a lot of scholars. While not definitive, and he admits as much, it was still compelling in its thoroughness and comprehensiveness. Well-sourced too, I might add. There were long Biblical passages that I didn't always feel like slogging through, but Price's writing was nothing less than gripping and often humorous. Whether or not you come away convinced of everything he says is almost beside the point, as long as you're open-minded enough to consider it and possibly change the way you approach religious texts. Then his work and applause-worthy scholarship will not have been in vain.

If you thought the Old Testament was the rock solid foundation of the Faith after Robert Price dismantled the New, this book disabuses you of the notion. The Old is just as full of fabrications and hidden agendas, which Price teases out one by one. In fact, he dates monotheistic Judaism so late and blasts the timelines of Christian origins so completely, that the two may have grown up essentially together - or at most 200 years apart. Some favorite zingers: 1.) There are two lists of the 10 commandments. #10 of the less famous list says you must not boil a baby goat in its mother’s milk. What the heck? But that line was found on a cuneiform tablet as one line of a magical curse. The Bible has only this isolated fragment. 2.) Two different people are said to have killed Goliath. Dishonest translators inserted “the brother of” in one place in an attempt to “fix” the scripture. 3.) A fellow stole a nice coat plundered from an enemy city. Yahweh found him out - rather like a seedy TV detective - and ordered his punishment, which was to be stoned to death along with his children and animals. It all had to do with ritual purity. The criminal was presumed to have touched and contaminated his children and animals. Stoning was a method of execution that did not involve touching the victims. That’s Judeo-Christian morality for you.

Richard Dawkins received an award for literature before he ever received an award for scientific content. Similarly, Dr. Price richly deserves recognition for his ability as a writer as well as his prodigious Biblical scholarship. He is able to draw on a broad familiarity with many aspects of culture as well to enrich his subject matter. I read this Volume through with great pleasure, enjoying its many insights, and plan to go back now and make a proper study of it.
I am particularly impressed by the case he has made for late, Hasmonean, composition, and the almost contemporaneous translation into the Septuagint. This was a revelation to me. Various schools of thought in Judaism and Messianism, vying for power and prestige by way of their writings in that period, and soon after, Christianity emerging from the mix - it all makes so much sense now.

EASY TO READ . Occasional humor keeps it light. The fundamentalist would object but if they were open ,inded Dr Prtice would gently permit a person to have greater , usable understanding of Bible. If yhou are adamant aboutinerennt Bible then do not read.

Classic Robert M Price, detailed and honest deconstruction of the sources.
In this he goes pretty quickly as he covers the entire OT. But if you want an overview of eveything this is a great place to look.

This book was excellent, informative, and the footnotes and bibliography are priceless for those of us that are amateurs scholars of the sacred text. One note of warning. The Kindle version of this book is plagued with a few typos. Most occur early on in the material in Genesis, though on my iPhone the poetic passages quoted from the prophets and the psalms often broke the lines in the middle of words when I was holding the phone long side up right. Other than that little bit of a problem this was a very good and pleasant and informative read.

I very much like Robert M Price's a writing style and his sharp scholarship. Although I may not agree with everything he says, his books are well worth reading. No biblical scholar is going to have exactly the same opinions or interpretations of other Scholars. With that in mind I highly recommend this book to interested readers.

Sehr gutes Buch, als Bibelkommentar zum Alten Testament oder einfach zum Durchlesen
Reviewed in Germany on May 11, 2018Verified Purchase

Intensely detailed

This is an incredibly review of the latest OT scholarship from a leader in the field. His chapters on the Pentateuch are a welcome expansion on the excellent YouTube series discussing the first five books in detail, and now we have references to chase down! The rest is a journey that demands significant investment in time and effort to truly appreciate the layers of complexity present, yet offers great reward for the reader who is well-versed in the OT. This work is not for the layperson; it isn't a guide through each and every book. In saying that, I found only the last third - that after the Pentateuch and Deuteronomic History - to be written in such a way that would absolutely require a deeper knowledge of the OT. The earlier sections are incredibly fascinating, and would offer any new reader enough interesting new avenues of discovery to make the reading of this book worthwhile for anyone questioning how the whole 'monotheism thing ' actually came about.

A fascinating read

A fascinating read. I'm no expert, so I cannot comment on the accuracy of Price's scholarship. But a scholar he is. And the background he describes from ancient cultures contemporaneous with the Old Testament texts is amazingly detailed. He writes clearly and brings a perspective to the the ancient texts that is unhindered by a pre-emptive commitment of faith that sees what it wants to see in the documents. A must read if you are interested in the Old Testament.
