I wouldn't call myself an expert pilot but I think I have a pretty good handle on these as I have a few of them. With that said this one takes a little while to get use to the control. There is NO altitude hold function on this model. The forward and back positions of the left joystick controls the RPMs of the motors. You have to constantly be aware of the position or it will FLY HIGH, FAST!!
The video that is attached is the 2nd time I was operating it. I'm not too stable in the video (the wind was blowing pretty hard) but I was able to control it easily. I'll post an updated video as I get better controlling it.
On the topic of batteries...
The controller has a rechargeable battery so you don't have to fill it up with 4 AAs and the drone itself has 2 easily swappable batteries.
Thanks for making the controller rechargeable Holy Stone!
On the topic of the camera...
They've designed a modular camera system. To record video or take pictures you'll need to plug the micro-sd card into the camera then transfer the picture/videos to your computer. It's pretty easy.
I wouldn't suggest this as your first drone but if you're looking for something that goes fast and has lots of power, THIS IS IT!!!
Unlike my other HS drone that had altitude hold and GPS to assist, this drone is like comparing a SUV with the "General Lee" car on Dukes of Hazzard TV series. LOL
I crashed it multiple times during my first attempt at flying. Pilot error. You need both hands on the controller at all times and your eyes on the drone. It doesn't have altitude hold nor GPS. If you aren't actively flying it, it crashes. Fortunately, it seems really sturdy so far.
Today, I had a more experienced drone pilot show me what I was doing wrong, and how to get more practice over grassy areas with little wind. See video.
This drone can really zip along, so be sure nobody else is nearby in your flight area. Practice, practice, practice!
Oh, and order spare batteries!
I bought this drone about a week ago. Although there is still snow cover where I live I thought I would report on What's In The Box with a follow-up shortly on my experience flying this Drone.
The Drone came very well packed. It includes a controller with a built in screen that gives you live video from the drone's camera. Video from the drone is captured on a 4gb micro sim card, which is included. Also included are two batteries for the drone body and a battery for the controller, plus the cables to charge the batteries via a USB connection. A nice feature is that you have a spare battery to use for an extended flying session before you have to charge the batteries.
The drone battery fits securely to the underneath of the drone body and is locked securely in place with a latch.
The drone's video camera is removable and slides out the body to allow access to the micro sim card. Video and still images are remotely captured using the handy buttons on the controller to turn them on and off. The video camera is fixed and faces forward. It cannot be tilted.
Although there are no propeller guards, eight replacement blades are furnished together with screws etc to attach them.
The construction is of course plastic and seems very sturdy.
I will update this review shortly to include my impressions of how this "racing" drone flies. The claim is that it can achieve speeds of up to 45km/hr or about 28mi/hr.
Ok, now for the longer winded version. One of the things I like best about this model is that it’s well suited for both beginner and expert pilots. It has 3 different modes, with mode 1 being the slowest and best for new pilots/indoor use, and mode 3 being the fastest and most responsive. I also own Holy Stone’s HS170 and would describe the 230 as its much faster, slightly easier to navigate big brother.
The model comes equipped with a 720P HD camera, as well as an integrated screen on the controller. The photo and video quality is decent, though not quite up to par with more expensive drones like the Spark. That said, this thing is such a blast to fly that I rarely find myself using it. But if you do want to snap a quick pic or take a short video, it’s available.
As I’ve already touched on, this thing is beyond fun to fly. I quickly found myself preferring the speed and responsiveness of mode 3, so I now use that almost exclusively outside. It does a pretty impressive job of handling light winds, but keep in mind that this is a pretty lightweight drone so it can get blown around a bit. Which brings me to my last point...
Durability. Just like the HS170, this thing can really take a beating. As an extreme example, just last week I tried to get a bit too fancy and some winds took it. Next thing I knew there it went..at least 60 feet in the air and quickly out of range of my controller, crashing into the woods about 700ft away. To my surprise not only did it survive, but there was barely a scratch on it! Replaced the propellers just to be safe and it now flies just as well as when I first took it out of the box.
If you’re on the fence about buying the HS230, hopefully this helped. The price is right, everything you need is included (no smart phone required), and it’s just plain fun to fly. I highly recommend this drone.

Very nimble, durable, and responsive but difficult to trim out of the box. I have a large yard with trees all around.Read more
