On the project, I used, as I said, a cheap assortment of sandpaper from Dollar Tree, some 3M paper, and then this assortment. I actually bought this assortment before I tried the 3M paper or I probably would not have purchased this. However, this sandpaper had a quality similar to the 3M paper, and I was able to sand down my guitar from a 220 grit I accomplished with the 3M paper all the way up to 1500 grit.
Of this assortment, I used 400, 600, 800, and 1500. This paper smoothed each level quickly and produced dust much like the 3M paper had done. The Dollar Tree paper produced very little dust. I spent 6 to 8 hours sanding the original finish from the guitar with the cheap paper. I got the entire front, headstock, most of the neck, and about an 8-inch section of the sides done before trying the better paper.
Once I switched, I was able to finish sanding off the remaining finish in a couple hours. Then it took about 2 hours of sanding with this assortment to bring the surface to a feeling like smooth plastic. I'm very pleased with the results, and would recommend this sandpaper as being a quality product that is maybe a little cheaper than the 3M brand.
I believe this sandpaper is cut to fit sanding blocks, but I didn't use any.
