If you don't have time to go get a cheap gallon of wine (which will cost about the same as this but be filled with wine!) and need an airlock, you're getting a one gallon jug and an airlock for cheap. I got this because I was busy and just needed a jug. It arrived before I would have found the time to get a gallon of Carlo Rossi and made some sangria to drink with friends, so that was the only reason. And the three piece airlock is great. The cap sucks. It doesn't arrive broken, but it you look at it sideways it breaks. It also doesn't make a decent seal with the airlock, so you'll be testing your brew to check for stuck ferment, but it's just that the gas is escaping from all the little gaps. I used plumbers PTFE tape to get everything to seal up. Then it worked fine. Until I tried to tighten it just a tiny bit too much and "crack" no more top. Do yourself a favor and order a bung with a hole for the airlock as well as a few metal caps. If this thing came with a better cap it would get 5 stars.

Got this to try my hand at making mead(first attempt)

For the first 4 weeks, everything seemed to be working fine, and when I went to transfer the mead into another jug after a month, I noticed that absolutely no bubbles were coming from the airlock, despite knowing there was gas builiding up, when I went to take the cap off, I noticed it was cracked in two places, one on the threads, and again in the airlock port.

Hopefully my batch isn't ruined, but it'll be really irritating if I've ended up wasting a month and some $40 (Honey+yeast+fruit)

The airlock DID work at the beginning, which was great, so I had no indication there would by any problems.

But the price is kind of high, I know it comes with a carboy and airlock, but it'd probably be cheaper (and safer) to get them separately.

This is a decent fermenter, check the seal on the top, if it's loose you run the risk of spoiling your wine. I actually found a cheaper source for these 1 gallon bottles, turns out whole foods sells apple juice in 1 gallon glass jars just like this one for under ten dollars, the bonus is you can basically throw some yeast in the bottle and get a hard cider to boot.

utter crap. the side of the cap was cracked and let air in, spoiling my batch. from reading the other comments this is not an isolated incident. if you get this product be sure to buy a bung with a drilled hole and one without a drilled hole. a solid cap is not included and the one included with the airlock is faulty.

Im using this jug to make my own ginger beer. Its great for people who aren't ready or don't have the equipment to manage huge 5 gallon or larger portions. The airlock is a huge bonus because so many recipes out there warn you about using glass jugs and stress the importance of "periodically releasing the gas buildup"...with the airlock, gas is released constantly, but at a rate slow enough that you still maintain the fizz!

Product shipped quickly, arrived whole, and is now in use for the 2nd time brewing a batch of ginger beer! Airlock fits snugly into lid of fermenter. Definitely a great product if you're just starting to explore home brewing or want to make small batches of brew.

I'm planning to use these to make mead in & hope there's no trouble with cracks or broken airlock part - will update this after I see how it works & if there's any problems - I'm really hoping not because raw honey is expensive, as well as the time to make, as well as time for aging (hoping it makes it that far!)

This fermenter, or carboy, is extremely good for the cost. The glass is made really well, and is in no danger of breaking anytime soon. I think it will have a good long lifespan for me. I have already made one batch of cider with it, which came out great. My only complaint is that the plastic airlock is made fairly cheaply.
