Deepak Chopra, Kabir Sehgal, and Paul Avgerinos are either immigrants or the sons of immigrants, making this project even more personal. The poems were inspired by a diverse group of immigrants to the US who made this country (and the world) a better place by sharing their gifts and talents. Many of the listed names were familiar to me, but not all, by any means, so I was grateful for the section at the back of the book that explains who each person is/was, where he or she came from (and when), and what he or she was best-known for. The list includes the three principal artists’ fathers as well as people who were or are prominent in the arts, sciences, government, media, sports, social activism, education and business. Each poem is a snapshot of of the person who inspired it, giving an impression rather than a detailed description and I’m sure many of the poems will inspire readers to explore the lives of these important people in more depth.
The CD includes an impressive list of guest musicians from all over the world in addition to the three principal artists who co-wrote the music. In addition to vocals by all three artists, Chopra plays tanpura drone, shaker, drums and percussion; Sehgal plays shaker, drums, percussion and bass; and Avgerinos plays synthesizers, piano, bass, bass violin, guitars, percussion, drums and did the sound design. All three are Grammy winners. Much of the music has a strong Eastern influence, but it is a blending of many musical traditions and genres into a true world music. Most, but not all, of the vocals are spoken words taken from the corresponding poems in the book. Most of the music is instrumental, and the words often float in the background, making this a soothing and relaxing work of musical art as well as a very important statement and reminder that nearly all of us in the US originated from immigrants who came here seeking a better way of life whether it was on the Mayflower or a more recent and modern mode of transportation.
I highly recommend this book and CD!
Deepak Chopra, Kabir Segal, Paul Avgerinos came together to produce music and an accompanying book with poems to give us hope for world peace and equality for all. This is a reminder of who we are, one people, one earth with one future.
Home- Where Everyone Is Welcome is the one musical project this year that everyone needs to absorb on every level. Physical, emotional and mental, the three elements that make us the sentient beings that populate our planet - that is the core of what this all means to each individual listener.
The old saying “Home is where I hang my hat” no longer resonates with our populace. Our great country became what it is through the hard work of immigrants and I think it is safe to say that anyone that plants their feet on American soil is because of an immigrant. Today we must be more aware of what goes on around us and we must unite to protect our country’s sovereignty. This can be accomplished in an intelligent and respectable manner. I will leave it at that and any political beliefs out of this because this is about music and poems. There are two specific art forms merging with this project to give us one cause to celebrate.
Everyone deserves a chance for a better life, to live their dreams freely and with the support of their loved ones and country speaking in one voice. I believe this but we must make sure we still have a place where a democratic government is in place to give everyone that opportunity.
Home is where everyone is welcome, it is more than a word or an idea it is a spiritual place that comforts and allows growth through a special listening experience. Home is where the heart is and some amazing musical experiences that resist being put in box. This is a project that stands alone with significant importance to all human beings that walk the face of this earth. It is all here, great music, words and poems with depth and good cause. This will have impact upon anyone that is willing to experience it.
