My cat is normally very well behaved, but when he gets hungry, he climbs into my bed and bites my arm until I feed him. I was pretty over it so I bought this feeder to hopefully transfer that aggression from me to an inanimate object. Well, it worked...except that aggression helped him figure out how to open the sliding panel in about half a day. He bites the little handle, pulls the panel upward, and it slides right open. To thwart him, I started filling the feeder exactly at meal time so he could eat from that section right away and there was no need to slide the panel closed. Therefore, it wouldn't matter if he could open it or not, right?
Wrong. That worked for about a day until he figured out that he could remove the panel entirely and reveal a bit of the section next to the open one as well. He again uses his teeth to pull the panel out, as it's not attached to the feeder at all; it's just hovering over the opening. This only exposes about an inch of the next section, but that's more than enough for my cat to stick his paw into it and scoop out an extra meal's worth of food.
My final triumph was taping the sliding panel in it's open position to the top of the feeder. That way, one section is open so my cat can eat out of it, but he can't pull the panel out completely and get to the next section's food. I've attached a photo where you can see that I used blue tape to adhere the sliding panel to the rest of the feeder's top. There's also more blue tape on the underside that isn't visible in the picture to provide extra protection against my cat's aggression. I was worried that taping the panel would effect the movement of the feeder but that doesn't seem to be the case; so far, this solution is working for me.
If you're reading this review and thinking that this feeder sounds very complicated, it's because this feeder is very complicated. If your cat has average to above average intelligence or gets aggressive when he's hungry, he WILL figure out how to work the panel and he WILL steal food before it's supposed to be available to him. If you're willing to put in the effort to tweak the feeder until you find a routine that works for both you and your cat, I think this is a good buy. If, however, this sounds like way too much of a hassle, I can honestly say that it is a pain and it's probably best to stick with a traditional food bowl or try to find a more secure automatic feeder. Even with the unexpected issues, I'm very happy I have this feeder. It stops my cat from biting me in the morning and it allows me to be out around his dinner time and not feel guilty thinking about how hungry he must be. For me, it's completely worth it.
A couple other random notes on this feeder: when you refill it and push either "start today" or "start tomorrow," it rotates to section 1 and plays the recorded message. Therefore, unless you fill the feeder at meal time, your cat is going to think he's being fed when you're just trying to refill the sections. I don't understand why pushing "start tomorrow" would cause the recorded message to play, but it does. This isn't really a problem for me now since I have to fill the feeder at meal time to avoid my cat stealing the food, but it bothered me immensely when I was first using the feeder. Also, my cat was terrified of this the first couple times I used it (the sound of it rotating was beyond scary), but once he realized that the noises meant food, he changed his attitude. If your cat seems scared, just give him time and I'm sure he'll adjust like mine did.
I opted to get this since it was round (taking up less space) and Iiked that there were color options. However, this product really tested my patience.
1) the mechanism to access each dish is convoluted. The tabs on the side to release the top is not as easy to open. I had to pry it open.
2) The loss piece - that operates as a window to close the expose dish - gets in the way a lot. When the dishes rotated, this piece would get pushback underneath the main cover, rendering it useless.
3) The timer - I have to reset it every week. Maybe I missed it, but when I set it, I assumed that was until I changed the settings. After the 6th day, I had to fill the trays AND reset the timer. In fairness, it wasn't me actually setting the time; I had to push "Start Now" or the "Start Tomorrow" button. But still, in a hurry, I'd fill the trays but because I forgot to "Start Now/Tomorrow" then tray never rotated.
Ultimately, it became more of a pain than helpful. I promptly rebought my old automatic feeder. I'll deal with the chunk and color if it means my cat actually gets fed.
