Leo grew up in the sea. He has a family of sea lions he loves. He’s happy, but he has always known he was different. Then Leo’s suddenly reunited with his human parents, and he finds he loves them too. But he still feels like a fish out of water. Being from two worlds and having two families isn’t so easy. Leo has a lot to figure out…
Splashed with humor and grounded in heart, this brightly illustrated story explores ideas of family, home, and belonging in a way that’s as relatable as it is unique.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“This lighthearted tale of a child reared by sea lions is completely outlandish yet manages to capably address very real feelings about belonging and identity…Not explicitly about transracial adoption or blended families, this is about a child longing to belong, and the simultaneous feelings of happiness and alienation here ring true.” ―Kirkus Reviews
“Readers will enjoy this method of visual storytelling, as bright colored images and careful use of white space separate elements of the story perfectly. The inclusive cast of human characters have large, round eyes full of cartoon charm which complements the endearing humor. Leo’s story will resonate with anyone who has ever felt a bit out of place in the world and will reassure that life will be just fine.” ―School Library Journal
“Vin Vogel tells the delightful story of the boy’s life by the ocean…Vogel’s energetic, cartoonish illustrations add to the appeal of Leo’s adventures. This out-of-the-ordinary story has a heartwarming ending, as Leo and his parents find the perfect home―by the sea, of course.” ―BookPage
“A Home for Leo became an instant favorite in our home…While parts of this story are humorous, others are also moving, and thought-provoking. There is just enough text to inform the reader, but there is also a lot to interpret from the illustrations. This allows children to practice inferring, thinking critically, and deepening their comprehension.” ―Library Mom
“Just like Leo, many times we don’t know where we fit in. We feel like a fish (or sea lion) out of water…A perfect book to share with multiple ages of children.” ―Christy’s Cozy Corners
About the Author
Vin Vogel is the author-illustrator of The Thing About Yetis and Bedtime for Yeti and the illustrator of Bob and Joss Get Lost! and Bob and Joss Take a Hike! by Peter McCleery, Music Class Today by David Weinstone, and Maddi’s Fridge by Lois Brandt, which won a Christopher Award. Vin grew up near the ocean and always wanted a sea lion as a pet. He also wanted to write a story about the idea of home and the feeling of being a fish out of water. When he heard about the sea lion population crisis in California, Vin knew this was the story he needed to write. After having lived for a time in New York City, Vin’s back in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he can be found with his two cats and his single-fin surfboards. This is a truly CUTE story! Absolutely LOVE it and I am not just saying that. I LOVE the story-line, illustrations, the entire thing. It is very rare for me but I can't think of one negative remark to make about this book. Well maybe this: IMPORTANT to note that this book is NOT suitable for all devices so please make sure you read the list before purchasing. I had to read it on my Cloud as it is not suitable for my Kindle Paperwhite. Many readers may appreciate this book better in paper form (I would) , truly being able to take in the colorful and descriptive illustrations.
I downloaded this book as my Kindle First Choice for June 2018. SO glad I did. Made me smile after a LONG day. Happy reading, Liz
First, it is completely parent safe. You are not going to find objectionable material in this book. (It is a shame as a parent that we even need to worry about that, but some children's books have inappropriate material for the younger audience.)
Second, the pictures are very cute and have surprising levels of details in them. That is good because ...
Third, you will find yourself as a parent or grandparent ad libing a lot during the book.
Many of the reasonable questions that any clever youngster will ask are simply not answered anywhere in this book.
Think of this as "Grampa makes up a story about Leo and some cute animals." I like making up stories. One of the interesting things is as the grandbabies get older, they will remember the previous version of the story and tell you "how your story should go." That is pure gold!
If you are looking for a complete, self referential story, then this is not a good book for you.
If you are looking for something safe and fun that will provide you and your angels dozens of hours of make believe fun then this is a great book for you.
The story is short and sweet, the illustrations whimsical and so deeply evocative that there’s almost no need for the sparse narration. Leo and his parents are caught in a storm while boating on the ocean and Leo is lost overboard. A family of seals rescues Leo and raises him to live in the ocean. When Leo is returned to his human family, he finds things are very different from his ocean family. HE feels so different. Can Leo find a way to belong?
A Home for Leo seems so simple on the surface, but it raises many questions about families, belonging, and the love that binds us. I’ll be sharing this message soon with some little ones and a few who are not so little, but who often feel as if they don’t quite belong. Highly recommended!
A Home for Leo displayed beautifully on a Fire tablet, Kindle for iPad, and Kindle for iPhone.
I did really appreciate the inclusion of a mixed-race couple. Thank you, Vin!
I'm disappointed that we can't read it on my phone - and could not see all of the error message - had to go get the Kindle. When it first loaded, it glitched somehow (perhaps the small memory of my model Kindle?), but when we finally got it to work, we were on the title page, so we just started reading from there. Some of the story didn't make sense because we had missed the pages *before* the title page. Once we went back and found those pages, the story made more sense.

Altamente recomendo. Divirtam-se!
