Too bad Mariah Stewart spent so much time thinking and writing about Lucy and Clay's business details, and not enough time was spent on building and developing their relationship. When I read a romance I want the couple to be in the same place together for more than one week. Lucy constantly having to go back to LA just got old. I also don't want to know every detail of how they run their business. If you want to write a book on how to run a business, then write one, don't make a romance novel out of it. If you want to write a romance then at the very least have the couple in the same town together falling in love.

Having said all that, I have to say that I read the first 4 books of this series and absolutely loved them. I love the town and the people of St. Dennis. I do plan on reading the next in the series; I just hope Ms. Stewart gets back to what she does best, writing about romance.

HOME FOR THE SUMMER is the 5th book in The Chesapeake Diaries collection. I have every book by Mariah Stewart and she's one of my favorite authors. She never disappoints her loyal readers, and always writes a wonderful story with likable characters.

The four books prior to "Home for the Summer", in order are; Coming Home (The Chesapeake Diaries) Home Again (The Chesapeake Diaries) Almost Home (Chesapeake Diaries, Book 3) and Hometown Girl: The Chesapeake Diaries. The usual cast are back including, Dallas and Grant, Steffie and Wade.

Lucy Sinclair and Clay Madison grew up in St. Dennis and they were best friends. Lucy always enjoyed the summer there, at the beach, sailing and swimming. But twenty years ago, something happened, and she's carried a secret with her ever since. She also left St. Dennis to attend college and purposely stayed away.

Clay on the other hand, remained in the small town and worked on the family farm. After inheriting the farm, he began an organic brewery and things were looking up. But, he never married and always had a place in his heart for Lucy.

Lucy returns home this summer to help out at the family inn in preparation for a big celebrity wedding. Lucy and Clay reunite and sparks fly. It's as if after twenty years nothing has changed between them.

I'm just about ready to give up on this series. There is entirely too much frivolous filler and not enough solid believable storyline in regards to the main characters. It took four books before we finally got Lucy and Clay's story -- and what a disappointment it was. Talk about cheating the main characters out of center stage! They spent more time apart than together and when they were together, most of that time was shared space with others. There was no feeling of a relationship growing between Lucy and Clay. Both characters made appearances in previous books and had piqued my attention from the beginning. Both were likable, interesting people with great potential for a captivating read. The author hinted at all the possibilities but chose not to write it. Even the ending was rushed and unromantic. This one was a major disappointment.

Oh sigh! I loved this story. It went by too quickly and really seemed to short. There were conversations left dangling and character interactions that were incomplete. There should have been more fleshing out of the characters and relationships. I suspect this one was written very fast to keep up with demand. I enjoyed it, but was left feeling like there should have been more to it.

I am pretty disappointed in this latest installment of Chesapeake Diaries. It was mundane, it dragged on forever, and most of the book was useless trivia or chatter. This book wasn't about the romance, it was about event planning. If you've read the other 4 books, then yes, read this one, but don't think you'll be blown away.

I was never a "romance" reader until I discovered Mariah Stewart through several of her FBI based thrillers which always had a love story along side the mystery and danger. I like how Mariah Stewart ties all her books together through interlocking characters. That is particularly nice in this book which for the first time ties in the Mercy Street characters to her world of the Chesapeake and FBI characters.
The presence of characters that we've experienced before, makes it feel like we are part of the community and friends of the central characters.
