Develop a Z-Wave smart home system using the HomeSeer HomeTroller Zee S2 as your foundation. This palm-sized home controller is powerful enough to manage an entire collection of Z-Wave devices and more. Upgraded from the original Zee model, the Zee S2 also supports X10 and Insteon devices, plus a few plug-ins. Additionally, the Zee S2 includes HomeSeer’s cloud-based "myHomeSeer Remote" service for free, giving you remote access to your smart home system from anywhere you have Internet. You can easily control devices, change events, and troubleshoot issues whenever you like. With a built-in web server, the HomeTroller Zee S2 offers convenient remote control of your smart devices through a free mobile app (HS3Touch) for Android and iOS, available in the Apple Store and Google Play Store. Its graphical user interface (GUI) is designed for use with touchscreens, smartphones, tablets and other devices. The Zee S2 is also accessible via desktop PCs through clients that are freely available for Windows, Windows CE and Linux devices. Program navigation is simple with cascading menus. You can jump quickly from one part of the interface to any other with just a click. The menu bar remains active and always available even when you scroll down pages. The HomeTroller Zee S2 runs on an energy-efficient Linux platform and uses full boolean logic with a simplified workflow.

First, the interface in the web browser is not very intuitive. It is often difficult to find the settings you need. At least once, I have had to call the company to figure out where they hid a devices settings. Anytime I need to add a device, I always have to pull out the instructions as the interface is just overly complicated in some areas. I say this as a IT professional who is very familiar with technology and who is not daunted by programming tasks.
The major problem I have run into is that the smartphone app does not work outside the house. I have followed their instructions for forwarding ports on my router and I know they are working correctly as I can access the device outside my house from web browsers on both my smartphone and other computers with no issues, but if I try to use their smartphone app remotely, it denies me access. What really annoyed me was when I contacted the company about this issue, rather than trying to help me troubleshoot the issue, they instead tried to sell me a monthly subscription service instead. Too me, that was pretty shady. I still have not solved the problem with their App and have to rely on web browser access for the time being.
Overall this is a good product and I am happy with it. I would just like to see the company take its customers' issues a little more seriously and work to solve problems with their existing app rather than trying to sell you another service to do the same thing their App is supposed to do.
The programming rules structure is very powerful AND easy to understand. Using Vera I could do anything I wanted, but programming what should be easy took several overnight sessions and grey hairs to get working. With Homeseer I setup complicated rules in a few minutes and they work flawlessly. The Z-wave implementation is much more efficient than Vera so device control that used to take 2-5 seconds on Vera are instant on Homeseer (I think Vera over polls devices by default). Whatever the device can't do you can create VB.net scripts to accomplish (I only needed to write scripts for crazy very specific functionality that you can't expect a sellable device to have). In other words, this device gave me a platform to accomplish ANYTHING I could dream up.
The Zee S2 controller has a plug in limitation of 5 plugins (heavy or not). This stunk because I wanted to add 1 more plugin and couldn't so I had to remove another plugin that wasn't as important. On the other hand, the 5 plugins I do have are all that I really had to have and the others I could live without, but not having this limitation or at least warning users that having more than 5 plugins could lead to performance issues with a Razberry would have been been more considerate as not all plugins have the same performance impact. The UI (HS3) overall could be made to be even more user-friendly, but it is a huge improvement over the previous version of Homeseer and a great step forward. I didn't buy HS2 in the past because it looked Windows 95 and you had to pay for plugins (ironically, I had no problem shelling out $40 bucks a pop for switches). But in hindsight, although paying $40 bucks for a plug in or two might seem like a lot, the pay for plugins are extremely well designed and easy to implement. I lost a lot of valuable time I can never get back with Vera which is way more expensive to me than $40 here and there, so in other words, you get what you pay for, quit being cheap and buy the plugin. I only needed 2 pay for plugins. The final con is this device is not yet ready for non-techy users (although with enough persistence a non-techy user can eventually get it). If you don't know what an IP address is, buy something else.
Overall, this device is a tremendous value and I would highly recommend.
If you don't feel comfortable changing port configurations in your WiFi router, find someone who is.
