Review

This must-read book is a diamond in the rough. It is an exemplary piece of work that fills a gap in the global conversation about pregnancy and birth. This unique text delves into the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of what can result from having a birth experience that was in no way envisioned. Women desiring a homebirth and ending up with a cesarean birth in the hospital can experience a multitude of challenging feelings that deserve extended processing.
--Dr. Jessica Zucker, clinical psychologist and contributor to The New York Times, Medium, and PBS

My hope is that this powerful book will be read by everyone who doesn't want to read it. So many people, myself included, don't know what to say or do after a homebirth cesarean, and the result is isolation and pain for all. By shining light on this subject, understanding can emerge for all of us.
--Gloria Lemay, midwifery educator and birth activist

There is little understanding in our culture for women who desire a natural birth and end up with a cesarean. This book is of utmost importance, as it gives voice to the reasons why women choose to birth at home as well as what happens to them--and to our culture at large--when they end up in the operating room instead.
--Nancy Wainer, Certified Professional Midwife, author of Silent Knife and Open Season

"Homebirth Cesarean" is rich with the voices of brave women whose outcry of triumphant victory beyond shock and grief opens a door of authentic dialogue for those of us who care deeply about how Mothers and Babies are born. Read it. Keep it close. Share it. Join these brave women in finding your own voice leading to positive action that such a work inspires.
--Sister MorningStar, Certified Professional Midwife, author of The Power of Women

Homebirth Cesarean explores the spectrum of emotions that can take place after the loss of an intended homebirth and models for its readers how important it is to make meaning of the resulting feelings. Traumatic births have been identified as a risk factor for postpartum depression making this book all the more vital as women reflect on feelings emerging during and after a child is born.
--Dr. Jessica Zucker, clinical psychologist and contributor to The New York Times, Medium, and PBS

From the Author

The Homebirth Cesarean project started during my transport to the hospital, in the early morning hours of April 1, 2011. It would be another seven months before the seed of the book came into the world--I opened a new document on my computer, saved it as "homebirth cesarean" and wrote nothing else. I didn't know where to start, but I knew it had to be done.

This book is a first-of-its-kind glimpse into HBC birth, allowing people an opportunity to read perspectives from mothers as well as midwives, doulas, and other birth professionals. This book gives voice to homebirth cesarean women and the birth professionals who support them--many of whom have been silent in the greater birth conversation.

The experience of writing this book and working toward a sustainable conversation about homebirth cesareans has been joyful and painful in equal measures--there have been laughter and tears, frustration and respite, relationships created and strengthened and, in some cases, broken. This book began with one child's need for a cesarean birth, and it has paved the way for thousands of mothers, children, partners, and professionals to reclaim their stories and rename their experiences.

--Courtney Key Jarecki
