About the Author
Sherry Hayes is the inspiring Christian mother of 15 wonderful children and has been homeschooling for 25 years. She has seen the “graduation” of seven of her children from her home in colorful Colorado and she and her husband, David, are enjoying rearing the remaining eight still under their tutelage. She has been a compassionate promoter of redemptive home educating for almost a quarter of a century and has maintained the belief that it’s God’s venue for national and world revival. She has been a proactive advocate for homeschooling, a key speaker for homeschool support groups, and a successful writer encouraging practical Biblical family living on her blog, Large Family Mothering, www.largefamilymothering.com/ for more than nine years. Her new book, Homeschool Sanity, is the logical extension of her experience and desire to encourage and help to facilitate others who have decided to embark on the exhilarating journey away from the destructiveness of man’s wisdom and back towards the ways of faith in the living God of the Holy Scriptures. Some of the things I appreciate from this book are background info on Joseph Ray (Ray's Arithmetic) and William McGuffey (McGuffey Readers) and the ideas for using Charlotte Mason influenced education in the homeschool with a large family, a small budget, or both.
Includes ideas and example forms for notebooking. Also, reminder and validation that things like listening to good music and teaching life skills are important to the education of your children.
Homeschool Sanity includes many reproducible charts for notebooking, scheduling, and journaling activities. It is illustrated with beautiful paintings and woodcuts, plus personal stories and photos, and is very readable. very chapter covers a subject and is full of practical advice, without making the reader feel inadequate as a teacher! I really enjoyed reading the book as a boost to starting school this year.

P.S. Other reviewers have noted the cost, but as someone who has helped publish a book, I can say that it is a lot more money to publish than one would think, and the authors usually cannot get a huge profit from it-- especially for a book this size. Formatting is hard work (believe me!)-- and this book flows very nicely! I have no complaints about the quality or size of the book!
This book was a surprise to me, a HUGE fan of old fashioned educational material who needed some guidance on how to use the EES more competently with my children, and for educating myself further.
Sherry's message is informative, with the joy of The Lord and of parenting spilling out of every page.
I learned a lot and was greatly encouraged to love God and my family even more.
Sherry's book is an awesome resource for parents who need and want to home school, but feel they cannot do it due to monetary or educational inefficiencies. Her book will help you realize that yes you can educate your children without having to purchase expensive curricula or educational toys. Sherry's approach also fits in very nicely with other curriculum or approaches that you may decide to do. Sherry emphasizes 19th century texts, and in doing so, stresses a form of education, which is far superior than anything in most curricula or public and private schools and only the elite teach. It is an education that teaches you to think. It is not hard to learn the modern rules and changes of grammar we currently use, but it is much harder to learn how to read and understand an 19th century text when you have been fed the literary and artistic garbage of our present day and century.
For me, a mother and educator, I find her book reads true on many levels. She helps to teach parents that they are first and foremost to educate from the heart, which is the only education that matters. I am very eager for her to put out more volumes. I strongly recommend this simple book to help guide all parents through their homeschooling journey, and yes, this book deserves five stars.
I highly recommend this book!!
