Jennifer Croft is the recipient of the 2018 Man Booker International Prize for her translation from Polish of Olga Tokarczuk's Flights, as well as Cullman, Fulbright, PEN, MacDowell and NEA grants and fellowships, the inaugural Michael Henry Heim Prize for Translation, the 2018 Found in Translation Award and a Tin House Scholarship for her creative memoir Homesick, originally written in Spanish. She holds a PhD from Northwestern University and an MFA from the University of Iowa. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Granta, The Los Angeles Review of Books, BOMB, VICE, n+1, Electric Literature, Tin House, Lit Hub, Guernica, The New Republic, The Guardian, The Chicago Tribune and elsewhere.

A really excellent autobiography of the Booker International Prize for Translation winner (for her translation of Olga Tokarczuk’s book “Flights”, which was written in Polish). First I bought the English edition (brown-covered paperback) but returned it and bought the correct one — hard backed — the which has Jennifer Croft’s own photos throughout, important and essential additions to the text.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.

I picked this up after reading a review somewhere. It's hauntingly beautiful, and I read it in two sittings (Started it late afternoon). I do wish there was an explanation for the main character being called Amy and the book being called a memoir by Jennifer Croft. I kept waiting for a sentence but it never came, and I'm still a little unclear about it. But the book itself was riveting and spoke of intense sibling love in a way not covered elsewhere.

Written in the Second person, with substitute names, which creates a bit of distance or detachment, but without in any way reducing a reader’s empathy for the main characters. I read it in one day.

Croft is an amazing story teller. There are two different but related narratives in the book; the one she tells and the one she shows with photos. She writes about the language(s) very beautifully. I loved the way she thinks about words and letters! She invites the reader to think about translation, words, and connection in a very different way.

I loved this surprising, elliptical, semi-autobiographical novel. It's short, potent, and the addition of photos throughout contribute to the overall sense of discovery that each page provides. A paperback version would make the book much more accessible to more readers. I hope the publisher does the right thing.
