I was thoroughly impressed with Spessard's memoir. Each anecdote has the feel of a story handed down from family member to family member. Particularly in "Sweet and Sour Cherry Pie" and "Tough Guy," Spessard seems to find his voice and the prose are nothing short of beautiful. The themes of the text: the importance of patriotism, love for family, and self-reliance, are universal and will appeal to a variety of audiences, but will perhaps resonate most strongly with those who grew up at the same time. Nonetheless, these stories have the potential to resonate with anyone who has had a strong connection with a grandparent, an aunt or an uncle, or a brother.
My only wish is that the book were longer and allowed me more time to connect with the characters that obviously mean so much to the author. I will be looking forward to the next book and the chance to revisit these characters and the events surrounding their lives.
