The children are charming and my kids love watching them. The instructions are tastefully done: the butchering of a chicken gives a mild drawing to describe the actual killing, and then you watch as the wife takes the carcass and removes the feathers and guts. This is the real thing!
I was also impressed that each DVD (we have volumes 1 and 2--see review for 2) came with a booklet inside the box containing the recipes and how-to's for almost everything shown in the DVD. No note-taking necessary!
There is emphasis on nutrition and well-being, and although Christian-type references are made (God made our bodies to be healthy, etc) there is nothing preachy about it. This series really is for everybody. References to recycling and respecting nature are practical and non-political. This is about independence and living off the land.
I also really appreciated that they show (or at least talk about in some cases) how to do things the old-fashioned way by hand, and then show how they do it with minimal technology. Like making butter in the stand mixer instead of a churn. Milking a cow by hand and then with a little machine. The second DVD shows how to press apple cider with an old press and then using an electric juicer. Family recipes are shared as well.
We look forward to more from this family!
We are homeschoolers and this meet our family needs for many school lessons and unit studies.
These DVD's are pleasant home videos of a family trying to learn and live all the homesteading virtues. The family seems like a very nice Christian family. The DVD's will appeal to those families who have young children and are focused on watching young children learn techniques. AND, please pay close attention to the title of the video's as they are for beginners only. Anyone with gardening, cooking, canning, etc., skills will be bored.
In our opinion, The Homestead Blessings series of DVD's is for people truly interested in learning in-depth candlemaking, soap making, canning, gardening, etc. The West Ladies are very natural, highly entertaining, personable, and the DVD's are very professional.
