First off, I'm an old Homeworld player, and I enjoyed the game immensely when it first came out last century.
The remake is very nice, the new upgraded graphics and UI make the old game look and play excellently. So, you really can't go wrong with this game. I'm introducing it to my 12 year old now.
I had this collectors edition on order since last May, when they first announced it. I was very psyched to get it the other day. The highlight of the Collectors edition is the large "Pride of Higara" mothership model. It's nicely detailed and looks very nice. It has a USB plug at the base which allows parts of the model to light up; mainly the engines and the two docking ports on the ship. It would have been even more awesome if there were some portholes that allowed light through the model though. The included keychain and artbook are nice, but I wish the artbook was bigger.

I fell in love with Homeworld when it first came out when I was in high school. Now that it has been completely redone with brand new graphics, I was very excited to replay the game in its full potential. Below is a breakdown of the review of the collector's edition.

The Box:
The collector's edition box is a beautifully designed box and the way it was made to store both the art book and the "Pride of Hiigara" mothership made it that nice. The box is magnetically closed and is opened through the right side edge of the flap. The box is nearly completely white; if you're going to keep this somewhere out in the open, even on a shelf, it would require constant dusting. I highly suggest you cover it in plastic to make yourself life easier.

The Art Book:
The art book is actually a reprinted version of the original introduction booklet to the game, with extra features of art work from their art crew. While the book was nice, it was comparably smaller than the original and the art work featured; it was hard to appreciate at the small size scale it is featured on. It also never bothered to define the ships in high detail without you going to the wikia page for more details.

Right next to the art book is the Hiigaran key chain. It's a solid piece of metal, nothing special. While the decal looks nice, it's bit large and if you're carrying your keys in your pocket, it can be uncomfortable; you're better off using it to place on your bag. It's not high quality metal, so it scratches easy; don't use it if you want it in good condition.

The Mothership:
The ship itself is highly detailed than many action figures and models I've collected. However, I'm a bit disappointed in the ship I recieved.

I've deleted my previous review wherein I expressed problems with the model not lighting up and am now submitting an updated review.

It turns out that my model had a slight manufacturing "defect". The hole in the bottom of the model is "D" shaped, with the flat part of the "D" supposed to line up with the flat spot on the support rod. Unfortunately, the flat spot of the "D" in the model I received was at angle to the front of the model instead of correctly facing to the rear. While the included instructions do indeed state the correct alignment, the shading in the illustration almost makes it look like the angled position is correct, when it is actually impossible to insert the rod correctly. A little judicious use of an X-Acto knife removed the offending bit of plastic, allowing the support rod to be inserted correctly and fully, so it seats properly on the internal connection, producing a model that does indeed light up.

The only reason I knocked this down a star was the lack of a physical game disc. I know Steam Keys are all the rage and certainly reduce expenses but with a Collector's Edition that really shouldn't have been a consideration. And while this isn't a real behemoth of a download, there certainly could be people on capped accounts that might find this to be a problem.

TL;DR: S***ty model brings down an otherwise great collector's set.

I've loved Homeworld since I first played it (sometime in 2003/04) and so for me, ordering this was a no-brainer.

I have been following the updates, I answered the survey they put out to figure out what was going to be in the collector's edition and everything.

The Mothership model was a must-have for me and so I placed and order for this back in June...

The game itself is beautifully redone and a joy to play.

The keychain seems solid and is rather pretty.

The artbook is wonderful and the added history was a great little bonus for me since I love the Homeworld universe so much.

The model let me down. I first pulled out the base and it was hefty and had a nice texture and I was excited. I then pulled out the Mothership and it was light, hollow plastic. I honestly felt that the box the collector's edition came in felt like it was made better than the model itself. It also didn't help that since only the hangar bays and the jets light up, there is no way to display it where you get both the full effect of the model as well as see all the lights.

Given that the model was the only reason to really get this edition and that the standalone game was being sold for 15-20% off for the past couple of weeks, I feel this edition let me down and thus I dropped it two stars.
