Julia Schopick's book, Honest Medicine, focuses on four highly successful treatments ignored by mainstream medicine. The first is Silverlon, a silver impregnated mesh used to heal skin compromised by repeated surgeries and radiation treatments. The second is Alpha Lipoic Acid for chronic liver disease, the third is the Ketogenic Diet for seizure disorder, and the fourth is Low Dose Naltrexone. As a gifted medical writer, Julia brings each topic alive with the testimony of patients, their doctors, and family members.

A successful treatment for childhood seizures, the Ketogenic Diet is an excellent example of the insanity of US medical system. While a less effective drug treatment called ACTH costs half a million dollars for a few months, the Ketogenic Diet is more effective with no adverse effects, costing a few dollars. However, our medical system rewards and preferentially selects drug treatment, while there is no reimbursement or financial incentive to recommend the Ketogenic Diet, which involves patient education. This is quite different in other countries such as Portugal where the diet is universally embraced. Back in the day when I was a medical student rotating through the Neuropsychiatric Institute in Chicago, a young girl in the hospital had intractable seizures unresponsive to Phenobarbitol, the standard drug treatment which only made her seizures worse. Having memorized my studies like a good student, I made the connection with Porphyria, a metabolic disorder in which the patients cannot tolerate Phenobarbitol. A simple urine exam showed the elevated Porphyrins, confirming the diagnosis. Since drug treatment had obviously failed, the patient was then sent to neurosurgery which removed the seizure focus in her brain.

I've had the privilege of reading this book prior to publication, so I know what a tribute it is to patients and their families, who have fought to receive the best possible treatments for a variety of conditions. Like Julia herself, those who contributed their stories to this book faced sure defeat when searching and fighting for effective treatments for serious conditions. But despite the odds, these individuals kept going.

These treatents are not so-called "alternative therapies," so easily dismissed by conventional medicine. For example, the ketogenic diet for juvenile epilepsy has been around for decades, as has LDN, low-dose naltrexone, found to "stop MS in its tracks." (It's that, and more, including inexpensive!)

This is not a dry text...Julia had produced a true book of the heart, born of painful experience as an advocate for her late husband, Tim Fisher, whose story is told in this book. Julia's struggles illuminate issues we face as individuals and as a society. The book does no less than raise challenging questions about the future of healthcare in this country and questions the over-reliance on big pharma and institutional medicine and research. Honest Medicine makes a strong case for educating ourselves and forming alliances with individuals like Julia and the others in her book. Together, we can change medicine one brave patient and one open-minded, pioneering doctor at a time.

Patients around the world have a compassionate new advocate and voice -- Julia Schopick. Julia Schopick is one of those rare people in this world who can go through an agonizingly difficult experience, and instead of being paralyzed, ends up transforming pain into a passionate, clear-headed campaign to help others.

This is the story behind her new book, "Honest Medicine," which provides a rational, compelling and ultimately hopeful exploration of four life-saving but little-known medical treatments -- Silverlon, low-dose naltrexone, the ketogenic diet, and intravenous alpha lipoic acid -- which may treat or even cure serious and sometimes fatal conditions.

"Honest Medicine" is a well-researched, well-written look at these treatments, which have been all but overlooked by the medical world because they are not potential blockbusters from a financial standpoint. But these four treatments are potential lifesavers, as Schopick clearly demonstrates in the book's meticulous research and interviews with the doctors, practitioners, patients and advocates who are using these treatments in their practices, or who have benefited from the treatments.

Introducing the important Health 2.0 concept of "patient evidence-based medicine," Schopick outlines a compelling case for why these treatments should be part of mainstream medicine's approach to a number of diseases and illnesses.

As more of the business of medicine ends up controlled by journals, drug companies and medical societies, we need more independent advocates like Schopick, who, motivated not by profits but by patients and outcomes, are willing to help get information directly in the hands of healthcare consumers.

At last, a book about proven successful medical treatments that are readily available to patients suffering from a host of major medical conditions. In Honest Medicine, Julia Schopick has provided us with a valuable resource. The treatments her book features are not promoted by Big Pharma with huge ad campaigns that include 15 seconds of why you should ask your doctor for a brand name drug, followed by 45 seconds of horrific side-effects. The treatments Julia features in Honest Medicine are virtually lifesaving and free from side effects--a winning combination. I was deeply moved when Julia asked to include my daughter's experience on the Ketogenic Diet in this wonderful book. I hear daily from people suffering from life-threatening drug reactions. If only these non-toxic treatments were presented to them first, many would not be disabled from so-called "miracle drugs." Thank you, Julia, for pouring your heart and soul into Honest Medicine.
