“The Honest Ploughman” is five traditional ballads, a Carter Family song, and one original song.
“My Old True Love” is a Carter Family song. Two who were lovers meet after the fact, with some nostalgia.
“The Honest Ploughman” is from English ballad tradition. This farmer at 90, having give his best to the land, is now taking relief from the parish.
“Down at the River” is my original work, a song about music in the moonlight.
“The House Carpenter” is one of the better-known Child Ballads.
“The Outlandish Knight” tells how a maid turns the tables on her would-be murderer.
“Silver Jack” is a cowboy ballad. Religion is discussed around the campfire, and leads to a fistfight.
“Lost John Riley” is a beautiful English ballad about the reunion of a man and a maid.
Dean Rathje: voices, guitars, banjo, mandolin, bass.
