Cons: clumsy slamming lid, cheap lock and brittle plastic clasps. I broke one of the two keys and partially broke one of the plastic clasps on the first day. As another reviewer put it, the lock is somewhat of a joke, being a tad better than a little kid's diary lock. I broke both a key and one of the clasps in one swoop. The chest was on it's ege and tipped over on it's side, hitting the edge of a under-the-bed plastic storage container on the way down. I take credit for breaking the key as most keys would break under this force, but the clasp should have survived the fall. It's brittle plastic construction caused a part to chip off (compare pics of both clasps to see the part that broke), and now the lid won't close all the way unless I hold the clasp out of the way (as shown in another photo)
Tip on closing lid: Operating the lid takes special care. You need to make sure to open it all the way before closing the lid. Once the chest is fully open, gently let it down until you feel the hydraulics start to slow the lid's descent. This won't happen until the lid is 80% closed. As soon as the hydraulics take over get your fingers out of the way. That sucker is heavy. If you do not open the lid all the way and let go it will slam with force. There should really be finger holes on the side of the lid so you don't have to risk getting your fingers pinched.
All in all it seems like it will do what I need it to do, but the cheap peripheral parts knocked off a couple stars in my review.
THE BAD: Did I mention this thing is nearly 100 pounds! Although it is solid, there are 2 flaws. The side locking tabs have a really cheap feel, in the open position I think they could easily be broken off. The other biggest con is that you can only remove the key when it's locked. Therefore you can't just leave it unlocked and then open & close it with the side tabs - the key will be hanging out. The keys are very cheap prone to bending/breaking....which stinks if you have a safe full of valuable items.
OVERALL: It's taken a while to get used to the files being in there sideways, (that's your option unless you have legal sized file folders). Bottomline it is a solid item and serves it's purpose - I'd buy it again.
It’s fairly large, like a very large briefcase, and heavy, though with the handle, it’s possible to move with some effort. The build quality is reasonable, with a black metal casing and inner shell, and metal spring loaded clips to keep it closed. There is a lip and seal that runs around the inside of the lid that presumably keeps it watertight. The two clips that keep the unit closed when unlocked are fairly sturdy and there is no reason to think that they would fail under fire conditions. The walls are thick, and though I have no idea what they are made of, the weight makes it seem like it has to be something that could resist fire for a considerable amount of time. This is definitely a confidence-inspiring box.
There is a decent amount of room for papers inside the box. You can lay 8X10 sheets flat without folding, even large envelopes should fit. However the space would most certainly fill up quickly if you start putting hard drives, cd’s and other electronic equipment inside. A fair number of papers like birth certificates, SSN cards, passports, that’s about it. How much more could you need for the price?
Just so everybody knows, this is not a safe. It is not designed to protect against theft. Any good safe can be bolted to the house or building. This unit cannot.Read more ›
